Lilly to 15-day DL; Berg called up

Cubs placed LHP Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list.

Lilly is battling both shoulder and left knee inflammation, and missed a start last week before being roughed up against Philadelphia last Sunday. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, which has a recovering timetable of two weeks. As for his shoulder, he likened it to the same injury he experienced in Toronto in 2005. He missed 4-5 starts then, and Lilly indicated he won't pick a ball up for two weeks. That would put him at a three-to-four week timetable. Reliever Justin Berg has been recalled to take Lilly's place.

Why Berg over Blake Parker? Not a fan of pitch-to-contact relievers.

Berg is already on the 40 man roster so he has already used his option for this year. If Parker had been put on the 40 man roster, he would have used his first option when he was sent down in two weeks. If they wait until September or later to add him, he'll still have all 3 options next year.

Technically, they can wait till 8/12 to promote Blake Parker and he'd still have all three options next season.

So Marshall back to the rotation?

Len and Bob said Dempster is supposed to be back on Tuesday so no. It sounds like Hart will stay in.

Nope. Not until Ryan is ready at the very least and probably not after that (and that's assuming Ryan is ever ready which is questionable in itself). Hart will remain in the rotation and Dempster will essentially just replace Lilly when he comes off the DL next week.

Gotcha. And also shocked the crap that Matt Lawton brought us actually made it to the bigs. Great K:BB ratio

He's got a fantastic sinker...and that's about it. Not a bad option to have in the pen, but don't expect miracles.

I expect he'll be sent back down in 4 days, not 2 weeks. He'll probably go back down when Dempster is activated on Wednesday.

If he is given a chance and impresses, any chance theyd send down Shark instead to work as a starter?

Just as awesome that Freddy Bynum brought us Kevin Hart. Hart has 2 wins as a starter this season. If he never pitches again, weve already gotten more value than Bynum will ever be worth.

Take it for what's it's worth, but no shoulder tear was found.

http://vyous.com/sports/mlb/thecubs/2009/07/26/no-shoulder-tear-for-chicago-cubs39-ted-lilly---chicago-tribune

Ted Lilly breathed a sigh of relief Saturday after an MRI arthrogram revealed only inflammation in his left shoulder, but he still is expected to spend at least three weeks on the disabled list.

"I didn't think there would be any significant tears," Lilly said. "I've been in this situation [before] and have a good idea of what's going on.

for what it's worth, I saw berg throw a side session this morning and it was pretty awful. He couldnt find his release point to save his life and was throwing pitches all over the place. He threw really hard, but that's about the best I could save. Hopefully it was just nerves.

I think that would be another option. Not much time left for Berg to impress, though; just one more game to be played before the roster decision needs to be made.
