I also started the "Kevin Gregg is a sham closer" thread, just FYI. Outside of a rocky start, he's been outstanding. He's even done a pretty good job racking up strikeouts.

And this will look stupid if Gregg blows this save.

Stand by it. I like Kevin Gregg and I like the draft picks he's going to get us in the offseason.

In your defense, he wouldn't have been credited with a blown save because it wasn't a save situation.

Beyond that, I refuse to praise him because the moment he hears any of it, he'll remember he's Kevin Gregg and snap back to reality. :-$

Outstanding 1-out save today. I'm convinced.

86 percent save percentage. Decreasing monthly ERA since a horrid April. Two high end draft picks he will net us in the offseason if not re-signed(which should atleast equal the worth of Jose Ceda). I'm convinced this trade is looking a whole lot better than most people ever wanted to give Jim Hendry credit for. Kerry Wood's save percentage is ten points lower as well.

they should offer arbitration... he probably won't accept so then you let him go elsewhere. no gregg plus (probably) two first round draft picks is a lot better than signing gregg at a free agent price.

harden is also likely to be type A... john grabow (pirates) would be a good trade target because he's a lefty (not necessarily great against LH batters though) and projects to be type A after this season. beimel is likely to be type B.

I think Gregg's poor start was at least partially because he wasn't fully recovered from last year's knee surgery. I remember early in the year he said his knee locked up if he sat down without entering a game after warming up or if he went out for a second inning.

Any estimate of how much he would make in arbitration if he did accept the offer?

By no means am I an expert, but I would guess in the $7-8 million range.

He's making $4.2 million this year so that guess might be a bit high, but he's having a very good year so far. If his numbers continue the way they are and the Cubs continue to improve - thus giving him more saves - I could see him going that high.

That guess may be too high, though.

Gregg has been much better as of late, but he's still been only the 4th reliever on this team this year.

1)Guzman

2)Marshall

3)Marmol

4)Gregg

I wouldn't trust Gregg as much as Guzman and Marmol to get some of the outs that they have gotten. I still prefer them to be in the roles that they are in, but I have come to like Gregg a whole lot more than I did in April. At least with Guzman stepping up we can move Marmol into the closer role next season.

Personally, I'd rather move Guzman there and keep Marmol in the 'flex' role or whatever you want to call it. There's still not a pitcher in baseball who, when he's on, can strike someone out at will like Marmol can. I think that talent could still be better used in situations when the bases are loaded with 1 out in the seventh, up by one or two runs.
