Reading my "fact a day" Cubs Calendar today the note was:

On July 2, 1967, the Cubs held a share of first place in the National League for the first time since 1945.

That kind of blew my mind...I knew the teams sucked back then...but not even sniffing first place at anytime, in any season, for over a 20 year period....that's got to be tough to do.

They need to qualify that more. The 1946 Cubs started out 3-0 and held first place by themselves for a day, and held it with ties for the first four days of the season.

I assume they mean "after a certain point."

Yeah...I assumed they didn't mean the first day or two of the season...regardless...to not even sniff first place, say, after May 1 for over 20 years just sucks.

Yeah it does, but we still don't have it good. Wrigleys been around, what, almost 90 years. We still have no world series in our park. The Cardinals win one in the first year of their new park with a terrible team.

I remember that day like it was yesterday !!!

CUBS beat Cincinnati 4-1 on a Sunday afternoon behind a complete game performance by Fergie Jenkins, and the fans refused to leave the park after game !! Fergie had 2 hits and a rbi himself, while holding the Reds to just 3 hits. The only thing that spoiled Fergie's day was 4th inning HR he gave to Vada Pinson. It was the final game of a 12 game home stand that saw the CUBS take 11 out of 12. When the home stand started, The CUBS were tied for 3rd place with the Giants, 5.5 games behind the Cardinals and 4.0 games behind the Reds. At the end of the home stand, the CUBS were tied for first with the Cardinals, 4.0 games ahead of the Reds, and 5.5 games ahead of the Giants. I thought I had died and gone to heaven !!

Then we went down to Atlanta and won the first game...... and then..... well..... it wasn't too good after that. [/sigh]

Is "clarify" the word you were searching for? That sentence confused me.

No. Qualify is the appropriate word there.

After following your link I guess I see what you mean. I still think that's an interesting use of the word. At best.

Not to be a grammar nazi or anything. I just do alot of thinking.

I was in Chicago that day and attended the game. If I hadn't I might never have gotten "Cubs fever".

Well if Fred can survive this long so can I. :-))

That's because, relative to your entire life, it WAS yesterday. :D *Ducks*

[Memo to Dispatcher] .... I need a load to North Carolina. Got some unfinished business there to take care of. Thanx, Fred.

Yeah, but Cleveland can't seriously have any expectations. They're Cleveland

Now maybe you understand why 1969 was sooo special even though it ended with the epic collapse. Not first place for one day, but pretty much the entire season - ending in a brutal September. To this day, I have no doubt this is :-& why I have such an intrinsic dislike of the friggin' Mets!

It's really funny that you "corrected" this because you didn't know the correct grammatical usage of this word. Then you used "alot." Nope, you're no grammar nazi.
