Per Rotoworld.

Jake Fox could start the first game of Sunday's day-night doubleheader against the Cardinals, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.

It would be a lot to ask for Koyie Hill to start both games. Manager Lou Piniella has expressed confidence in Fox, even though he has never caught a game in the majors and has only caught two games in the minors this season.

Carlos Zambrano will start the first game of Sunday's day-night doubleheader against the Cardinals.

He's simply flip-flopping with Randy Wells, who will start the nightcap.

Putting Wells on national TV.

Also, I'm looking forward to seeing how Fox looks back there. I still hope we go after another catcher though. Just so we'll have Fox's bat coming off the bench instead of stuck as backup catcher.

It's bad enough that Fox might catch, but at least let him catch Wells instead of Z. There are going to be fifty billion passed balls.

I wonder what the rationale was to swap Z and Wells?

My guess would be that they wanted a veteran pitcher to throw to Fox. Instead of having him catch a rookie pitcher.

That's possible. That way Z can take control on the mound as opposed to having two rookies out there.

Fox catching a guy with as much movement on his pitches as Z could get mighty ugly.

Seriously. I get the "veteran vs. Rookie" logic, but still. The way Z's pitches move on a good night - fox will be letting balls get passed him every at bat.

Zambrano is more likely to implode after a passed ball than Wells.

Can Fox be much worse than Mike Piazza catching wise?

yes. mike piazza caught the ball but couldn't throw anybody out. fox probably can't throw out the ball and can't catch the ball either.

Can Aram play both games? If not, I want Fox at 3rd in one of them.

I'd guess if Aramis can't play both then he'll play the first (with Fox at catcher) and then Fox will take third in the second game.

Knowing Lou, it would have a better chance of being Fontenot at 3B with Blanco or Baker at 2B.

i don't know if you want a lousy fielder crouching for 9 innings and then taking the field for another 9.

Besides that one gaffe in LF the other day when the field was wet, Fox has been perfect defensively and until he messes up badly at third base, there is no reason to keep his bat out of the lineup when it's clearly superior to our other options.

but not 2 hours after he has caught for 9 innings

1st game = 12:05

2nd game = 7:05

not sure how you only figure 2 hours in between games, but I see your point all the same I suppose

Well at least I know to stay away from the game thread as it is going to be especially insufferable tomorrow. Can already see the constant ironic (is that the word I want?) "Jake Fox is a horrible catcher." posts after every time he succesfully recieves a pitch.

Perhaps switching Zambrano with Wells means Fox will catch Zambrano in game 1. The reason is because I believe Randy Wells is the emergency catcher right now and they don't want to play both of their emergency catchers at the same time with no backup.
