i love Sandoval like no other, but he's a very poor defensive player and Zimmerman's GG caliber. Zimm's the right pick.

You made this point better than I would have, I was trying to work in a joke about Sandoval playing like his glove was made of leftover bamboo shards. It wasn't working.

i don't doubt that, but i find it hard to believe the difference in defense is big enough to make up for a 100+ point differential in ops

how is mark reynolds' defense? because he's outhit zimmerman by quite a bit also. so have chipper and even casey blake. zimmerman is actually right in the middle of the pack in terms of offense from qualifying NL 3B

it seems like zimmerman got in because of his hot start and hitting streak while his overall numbers were ignored

damn it, now every time you look up jason marquis on baseball-reference, it's going to have the "all-star" tag next to his name. that pisses me off.

More than the same for Ryan Ludwick pissed you off?

if it makes you feel any better, he had better overall numbers for the Cubs at the break in 2007 than he does right now. Just not as many wins of course.

Pena replaces Pedroia.

You would think that Kinsler would have been the obvious choice to replace Pedroia.

I guess both all star managers used the position to get in their own slugging 1B that probably don't really deserve to be there.

MLB also probably wanted Pena for the home run derby so they may have encouraged it.

Zach Duke takes Matt Cain's spot on the NL roster.

Pena also added to the Home Run Derby, so gold star for whomever called that.

Zach Duke are you serious?

There's more than a couple NL starters I'd pick over Duke. Guess Manuel doesn't want to win.

Maybe because Duke last pitched on the 10th, so he'd definitely be available to pitch Tuesday? Hell, I have no idea.

duke is having a really good season you guys. i'd have taken vazquez over him, but picking duke isn't that ridiculous. Edited by 17 Seconds

like who? the only clear cut one that i can think of is vazquez. you could make arguments for gallardo (he's had 2 really bad starts in a row now so his numbers are pretty even to duke's, despite having way more strike outs), jurjjens (1.27 whip to duke's 1.21 and a not so pretty k/bb), wainwright (1.30 WHIP to duke's 1.21) and pineiro (as flukey as it may be, he's somehow been very productive so far. he has a 1.11 WHIP)

like i said, the only clear cut guy i'd put over duke that i can think of would be vazquez. the rest are pretty even.

haha greg amsinger on MLBN just questioned joe maddon on picking pena because of his batting average and maddon basically punked him out saying you can't just a player by his batting average and told him pena's OPS and other stats.

Get your head out of the spreadsheets Joe.

Just out of curiosity what were those "other" stats that were so impressive? Was one of them the "he plays for my team" stat? Because I think you have a hard time justifying the Pena selection other than with one of the oldest counting stats around, HR's. If we are going by OPS then Branyan, Dye, and Cabrera are all ahead of him and and doing better in almost all areas excepts HR's. Better for him just to admit it was a homer pick and not act like he made some great statistical anaylsis.
