What a month for the Cubs...here are some numbers to reflect what an interesting month it's been...

OPS for players in June:

Lee - .992

Fox - .939

Soto - .879

Bradley - .707

Theriot - .658

Johnson - .653

Hoffpauir - .645

Blanco - .613

Soriano - .595

Fontenot - .582

Fukudome - .531

Miles - .440

Hill - .178

Pitchers ERA in June:

Guzman - 1.89

Heilman - 2.08

Patton - 2.70

Gregg - 2.77

Marshall - 2.79

Zambrano - 2.91

Wells - 3.19

Dempster - 3.23

Lilly - 3.24

Ascanio - 3.52

Harden - 4.24

Marmol - 5.40 (17 BB in 13.1 IP)

Team stats:

OPS - .674 (27th)

BA - .234 (27th)

OBP - .305 (25th)

SLG - .369 (27th)

Runs - 89 (27th)

ERA - 3.21 (4th)

BB - 99 (3rd most)

K - 176 (16th)

BAA - .244 (9th)

OBP - .327 (15th)

SLG - .386 (10th)

OPS - .713 (12th)

Blown Saves - 6 (most in MLB)

WHIP - 1.33 (14th)

K/BB - 1.78 (24th)

K/9 - 6.90 (15th)

The pitching numbers are intersting. Despite having the 4th best ERA in baseball in June, some of their peripheral numbers are mediocre at best. Was it luck or just a small sample size that the numbers ended up this way?

I was just perusing the ESPN Cubs Clubhouse and found that any of the following players would be leading our team in AVG, R, HR, RBI, and OPS:

Chase Utley

Prince Fielder

Raul Ibanez

Justin Upton

Ryan Bruan

Albert Pujols

Aaron Hill

Miguel Cabrera

Torii Hunter

Victor Martinez

Justin Morneau

JOHNNY DAMON

I might have made a few mistakes but you get the picture.

I've really about had it with Kosuke. At this point I'd support benching him even for someone like Fuld or Freel. He's just brutal right now.

I really don't get Fukudome. It's not that pitchers have figured him out, otherwise he'd have struggled starting the season. He looked really dominant at the plate in april: he mashed pretty much every pitch in the strike zone. Now, it's back to the fukucopter. I'd really like to know how the hell that sudden drop-off happened.

As much as it sucks, Fukudome is a better hitter and fielder than Freel and Fuld. We're stuck with him.

I don't get it either. The cliche response would be to say that pitchers are adjusting to him, and he's not adjusting back. But I mean, how accurate is that? It's not like pitchers and hitters don't make adjustments in Japan. I don't get it, I really don't. But I'm not sure if I want to understand anymore, I find myself caring less and less each time he corkscrews himself into the dirt.

Is he that much better defensively than Fuld or Freel? Defensive stats are debatable as far as their accuracy goes, but I'd still have to check I guess.

He's been bad defensively, too. In my limited time watching recently, he took two piss-poor routes to balls to his right, letting them get all the way to the wall.

Same thoughts here. If anything I'd classify him as average defensively, especially if he's in CF instead of a corner spot.

I can't get over how much of an unmitigated disaster Soriano and Fukudome have been.

Id say Im more upset about Soriano than Fukudome. Fukudome is just repeating last year. Soriano has always been either really hot or really cold, but I dont believe hes ever been this cold for this long before.

Fuld, I have no idea. But Freel's never looked good in center whenever I saw him play in Cincy.

Yeah, we were supposed to get our Summer hot streak from him by now. Just hasn't happened this year.

We were supposed to get decent production out of him for the first 4-5 years of the contract. He's 33, in just his 3rd year. I don't even want to think about him at 36, 37....

One prediction that has come true: that contract is putting off a odor, at ever-increasing levels, each year. In a couple years the reek is going to be nearly intolerable.
