I can't believe I just watched Nadal get worked over like that. This certainly opens up the bottom half of the draw now. Any of Murray (No. 4), Tsonga (No. 5), Ferrer (No. 7) or Del Potro (No. 9) could come out of that half.

The result today is why I think Federer should go down as the greatest of all time. Nadal had made five consecutive major finals, five consecutive semifinals and 11 straight quarterfinals. Those are the third, fifth and fourth longest streaks in the history of tennis. Yet they pale in comparison to Federer at his peak, with streaks of 10 and 8 straight finals, 23 straight semifinals and an ongoing streak of 32 straight quarterfinals. I'm sure Federer faced a number of guys who had their best days against him during those streaks yet he never lost. He's obviously got the majors and the all-court game but he also had the remarkable consistency over the last eight years that no player in history has ever had.

Agreed, he is easily the most complete player ever. He had no weakness in his 5 year or so prime.

If Federer wins Wimbledon, he will regain the No. 1 ranking, which is relevant because he is only one week behind Pete Sampras (286-285) for most weeks spent at No. 1.

With Nadal's loss, Federer is already assured of moving up to No. 2 in the rankings.

Federer just lost the second set tiebreaker.

Benneteau is following the Rosol model right now. He's serving well, going for it on his groundstrokes and he's catching a ton of lines.

EDIT: This is about the get interesting. Federer broke to start the third set, held serve, then broke again (this time at love) and is up 3-0 in the third set.

Once again, Federer finds a way to get through. He smoked the guy in the third set, won a very tight fourth set in a tiebreaker and got and early break in the fifth and rolled him.

Good rebound by Murray. Could have been down 2 sets to Ferrer now with a 2-1 lead. He has to take advantage of not having to face Nadal. On the other side Federer is playing great. I think he is going to really challenge Djokovic in the semi's.

I'm hoping for Federer-Murray just so that it'll be a good story either way. It has been a long time since someone other than Djoker/Nadal/Federer won a GS event.

Since Roddick won the US Open in 2003, only three of the subsequent 34 majors have been won by someone other than Federer, Nadal or Djokovic.

If you move forward to the 2005 Aussie, those three have won 28 of the 29 majors. The lone exception is del Potro in the 2009 US Open, and he had to beat Nadal in the semis and Federer in the final to do it.
