Unless the Smokies web site is lying to me, it looks like Jay Jackson has been skipped. He should have started game 2 yesterday or should have started today but the Smokies web site has the next starter in the rotation, Casey Lambert up. Hopefully it's not a serious injury if that's the case.

Drew Macias is back with Iowa.

Jeff Samardzija: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 GO-5 FO on 64 pitches.

Samardzija: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 3 GO-5 FO. Not sure about the pitch count but it's probably in the 80s and Vince Perkins was warming in the pen at the end of the 5th so I think Samardzija is done. ETA: 86 pitches. He should be done.

2 of the 4 hits Jeff gave up were infield singles. That 6th K was on a "good splitter."

Has he been unlucky? The BAA and K:BB look pretty solid to see the ERA that high.

No, not at all. He's allowed 5 HR.

I've given up on projecting Samardzija's career. I feel like the guy could either become the next Cubs ace or he could retire from baseball tomorrow, sign with the Bears, and become Jay Cutler's top receiver over the next 10 years.

Every time I get down on him, he goes and puts up really good numbers. Every time I'm excited for him, he stinks up the joint. So, rather than try to figure him out, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

I think that's been my philosophy with the Cubs since the 2003 NLCS. As predictable as baseball looks, it just isn't. Certainly not game to game. Seriously though, I was losing my hair up until around '03-'04 and then it stopped falling out. I have no other explanation...

Oh good point, I should have looked at that.

Whoops!

Not that it really matters. Just read it though....I'm trying to avoid the inevitable homework that is due tomorrow....NSBB.com has proven to effectively take care of that - at least until the game comes in right now! #-o

Jay Jackson got the start for Tennessee. Colvin back in Daytona's lineup.

harrison also homered in the first.

daytona is up 7-0 after 1.5 innings. castro has singled in 2 ABs and searle threw a 1-2-3 first inning with 2 ground outs and a K. should be an easy one as long as they stay dry through 5. colvin is back in the lineup and has doubled.

jay jackson started for tennessee and has given up 3 hits in 2 innings, but also K'ed 3.

bad 2nd for searle:

* Manuel Rodriguez doubles (8) on a fly ball to right fielder Dylan Johnston.

* Kevin Ahrens singles on a ground ball to center fielder Tony Campana. Manuel Rodriguez to 3rd.

* With Adam Loewen batting, wild pitch by Ryan Searle, Kevin Ahrens to 2nd.

* Adam Loewen walks.

* Jesus Gonzalez singles on a line drive to left fielder Jonathan Wyatt. Manuel Rodriguez scores. Kevin Ahrens to 3rd. Adam Loewen to 2nd.

* C. J. Ebarb lines out to first baseman Ryan Keedy.

* Chris Emanuele grounds into a force out, shortstop Starlin Castro to second baseman Nate Samson. Kevin Ahrens scores. Adam Loewen scores. Jesus Gonzalez out at 2nd. Chris Emanuele advances to 1st, on throwing error by second baseman Nate Samson.

* Darin Mastroianni walks. Chris Emanuele to 2nd.

* Justin Jackson grounds out to first baseman Ryan Keedy.

i didn't know adam loewen had converted to outfield. what a bust.

solid baserunning for ryno's team... thomas has walked and singled but was picked off both times; guyer reached on an error and was caught stealing.

pretty pathetic second inning:

guyer reached on error

guyer caught stealing

jay jackson walked

tony thomas walked

thomas picked off

barney singled

smith grounded out.

that is how to run your way out of a big inning.

Confusing night for Thomas. A single and a walk in two plate appearances so far, and both times when he has gotten to first base he has gotten picked off. The 2nd time was with the pitcher standing at 2nd base so he almost certainly wasn't going anywhere.
