The Cardinals expect Chris Carpenter to return from the disabled list Wednesday and start that evening's game against the Cubs, manager Tony La Russa confirmed on Sunday.

Carpenter has been out since April 14 due to a strained left oblique muscle. He threw four simulated innings on Friday, followed by a bullpen session on Sunday morning. The Cardinals had hoped to hold Carpenter out until next weekend. However, a rainout on Friday and subsequent makeup day on Monday forced their hand, as the club lost an off-day and had to go to a fifth starter sooner than expected.

Last year, they rushed him back too quickly, and paid the price. I hope(kind of) that TLR doesnt make the same mistake again just to spite the Cubs.

His return last year was also against the Cubs. Lets hope this one ends the same way, but even if it doesnt Ill put the over/under at 10 for how many starts he makes the rest of the year. Ill take the under.

Has Carpenter thrown any rehab starts?

If not, he probably won't be good for much more than 4 or 5 innings. Especially considering the Cubs are pretty good at taking pitches.

He threw 100 pitches in a sim game the other day.

So who's gonna pitch the 3rd inning?

I told my Cardinal fan buddy that Carpenter would own us for the 3 innings before he left with an injury. That buddy got really busy at work after that.

I'll be at this game. I hope Soriano welcomes him back with a long homerun.

As will I. First Cubs game of the year for me. Need to keep pushing the Cards down into the toilet.

He did throw a sim game the other day and I've heard he'll be on a 75-80 max pitch count. I don't know how accurate the PC number is, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to bring him back to pitch 4-5 innings with an already over worked bullpen.

Over worked bullpen? Are you crazy? He really needed to use every pitcher in the pen except mop up guy Thompson in last nights 8-4 loss.

Huh? All I was saying is that the Cards starters have had some short outings of late and the relievers have seemed to been picking up a lot of innings in the last week. Unless I'm terribly confused by your post.

I think your terribly confused by his post. Hes being sarcastic about Larussa bullpen management.
