As much as I love Gonzalez. I think I would go with Peavy. A 27 year old bonafide top 3 pitcher in baseball.

I'd rather have a good lineup with a pitching staff of Peavy, Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly. Then have a great lineup with Gonzalez and a good staff of Z, Harden, Demps, Lilly, Marshall.

Any chance we can ripoff the Padres like we did the Pirates and Marlins. Do a DLee (contract expires next year right), Marshall, Vitters, Wellington Castillo, whoever else they want fron our minors for Gonzalez/Peavy.

Im sure its just a wet dream but wow..

I doubt Lee would want to play in San Diego in a contract year. He has a no trade clause. No way that deal could happen.

He is from Cali though so you never know. Although I believe he was upstate a bit in Sacramento.

San Diego is as close to Sacramento as Chicago is to Toronto.

That's just strange to think about.

Gonzalez/Peavy would probably cost you DLee (plus cash), Marshall, Vitters, Castillo, Soto, and Marmol.

Done and done. Maybe try and give them someone besides Castillo so he can maybe come up and take Soto's spot eventually.

Adrian Gonzalez would be huge on this team. But there is no incentive for the Padres to trade such a cheap and productive young player.

There wasn't any incentive for the Padres to trade a cheap outfielder by the name of Jason Bay (along with Oliver Perez) for Brian Giles, either.

But it happened.

Except they were going for a playoff spot. This isn't, or wouldn't be, the same thing at all.

With a 52-81 record on August 26th, 2003, the Padres traded for Brian Giles so that they could get a playoff spot?

Awesome. I hope they made it. Oh, wait.

We do seem to have some people on this board who seem to think that all Jim Hendry has to do is mantion Josh Vitters and Sean Marshall and all other GMs begin to salivate and offer up all their top players.

Ok, that does make no kind of sense. Why the hell did they do that?

I don't happen to be one of those people. I'm just pointing out that you never know what to expect with the Padres.

there's a big difference between trading two minor leaguers and trading two established all stars.

It made zero sense, other than maybe they thought Brian Giles would create a boost in attendance to finish out a really bad season. Giles is from La Mesa, which is only about 5 miles from Qualcomm. Ironically, their attendance this year mirrors what their attendance figures were in 2003.

The Padres moved into Petco in 2004, where they saw a boost in attendance by nearly 1,000,000 people from the 2003 season. Attendance only dropped a little bit each year after their inaugural season until last year when the team lost nearly 100 games.

More than anything, they probably wanted some name players to build up their opening of the new ballpark. The 2004 team was actually pretty decent if you look up and down their line up. And in that sense, it worked. People came out to see the new stadium, and that team was actually competitive.

Derrek Lee can hardly be classified as an established all star at this juncture.

Oliver Perez was not a minor leaguer. Corey Stewart (the third player in that deal) and Jason Bay were both minor leaguers at the time. Bay was ripping the cover off the ball in AA and in AAA. I think Corey Stewart was actually the Padres top prospect at the time, IIRC. If it wasn't Stewart, it was Mark Phillips.

Horrible trade by the Padres. Not that the Padres are alone in that. The Adrian Gonzalez/Chris Young fleecing is a pretty impressive haul as well.

Jason Bay had like 3 major league ABs and Oliver Perez had an ERA in the mid 5s that season. There's no comparison.

Not really comparing them, per se. You must have missed this post, so I'll post it again.

Will the Padres trade Gonzalez? Who knows. I wouldn't put it past them. I don't think we'll be seeing a D. Lee for Gonzalez trade in our lifetime, but I would not put it past a team that will scream fire sale in a crowded movie theater at the drop of a hat to sell him off to the highest bidder sometime before he becomes extremely expensive.

Don't the Padres have a highly touted 1st base prospect in the minors that Gonzalez is currently blocking? I thought I remembered some speculation to that effect when the Peavy talks were in full swing. Trading Gonzalez now would get a better return because the team getting him would be guaranteed more than just a rental.

The Padres would probably want pitching for Gonzalez. I doubt they'd want Marmol as he will only get more expensive. A team like the Padres really can't afford to pay a lot for a set up man.

Kyle Blanks is hardly a sure thing. His biggest struggle will probably be his weight.

He hits real nice, but to be pushing 300 lbs. at 22 years of age has to be a concern.

And trading Gonzalez now would probably net the biggest return they could possibly hope for. But, the fan base has to be a concern right now, also. They haven't taken the pitchforks off the wall yet, but they probably aren't too far from that.

Since when have the Padres cared about the fanbase? If they could get 2 guys that were MLB ready and a couple good prospects for Gonzalez (things the Cubs don't have) they'd have to do that deal. With Gonzalez they're going to finish last. If I were a Padres fan I'd rather see them add more pieces to rebuild than hang on to the one guy that's any good.

That being said, teams just won't trade prospects anymore so I doubt they could find a deal they liked for Gonzalez.

okay, perez was a young guy who had yet to do anything good at the big league level. bay was well regarded as a prospect but i think most people saw his ceiling as above average corner outfielder, rather than one of the better corner OF in baseball.

definitely a bad trade, but as far as trading commodities, a 24 year old AAA outfielder and a major league 21 year old pitcher with a bad ERA are very different than an established #1 and one of the best 1B in the game.

For the team we have right now, I'd rather have Gonzalez. I think our rotation is already stacked and it's certainly not our weakness. The only reason I would want to add Peavy is so we can use Marshall in the pen so we can get rid of Neal Cotts... but that's another story. I'm not a fan of D-Lee's offense these days, although he is a studd on defense. I'd still rather have Gonzalez.

Typically this would be a pretty fair question. However, the loss of over 10,000 season ticket packages just this past offseason alone might be just enough coffee to wake this organization the heck up.
