I wish we had not signed Dempster to such a big deal this offseason.

Who would we have replaced him with?

I was skeptical at first, too, but a month and a half into it he's pitching like he's earned every penny.

I think it was a risk JH had to take, and as much as I criticize him, he made the right call with Demp.

Just think how dumb the Texas rangers are/were

Just noticed the Rangers gave up Gonzalez + Young + Sledge for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. Christ almighty, that is the most lopsided trade I've seen in awhile.

His ERA looks bad, but most of his peripherals are right in line with last year, save his opponents SLG. His k/9 is up, his k/bb is down a shade, but still higher than any other year except 2008, his opp. avg and obp are about the same, and his WHIP is good. Basically the only thing he has done wrong is leave a few pitches up at inopportune times. which have turned into homers.

Time will tell.

His peripherals are very similar to last year, but opponents' LD% is lower (13% now vs 17% last year) and opponents' BABIP is a tad higher (.292 this year vs .282 last year). I doubt he'll be as dominant as he was last year, but signs point to him pitching well this year.

Don't the Padres have a highly touted 1st base prospect in the minors that Gonzalez is currently blocking?

I was just reading at Baseball America that the Padres have been trying Kyle Blanks out in LF in AAA. Adam Dunn is listed at 6'6" and 240 lbs. Kyle Blanks is currently 6'6" and 285 lbs.

That should be an interesting experiment.

Kyle Blanks is hardly a sure thing. His biggest struggle will probably be his weight.

He hits real nice, but to be pushing 300 lbs. at 22 years of age has to be a concern.

(cough)Prince Fielder(cough)

Okay. I'll play.

(cough) every single other 300 lb. 22 year old not named Prince Fielder (cough)

I wouldn't call them dumb anymore, they have put together a farm system and base of young talent that I would kill for.

Just because they put it together doesn't mean they won't trade it like a bunch of idiots. John Danks for Brandon McCarthy, Gonzalez for pretty much nothing, even Volquez for Hamilton looks bad because their pitching has sucked forever.

I would still trade Volquez for Hamilton regardless of their pitching. They were too quick to give up their minor league pitching before, but since Ryan took over as President that has seemed to change.

Are you referring to the NL record? The record, I believe, is held by Yankees 1b Don Mattingly from the '80's, who had HR's in 8 straight games. I thought I remembered hearing that someone might have tied the record, but I'll see what I can find.

ETA: Found it.

Dale Long had HR's in 8 games in a row in 1956 for the Pirates.

Don Mattingly had the same number for the Yankees in 1987.

Ken Griffey tied the record in 1997 with Seattle.

So Mattingly didn't actually set the record, Long did. Hmmm.
