A few miscellaneous notes:

- heard Nate on the radio on the way to my noon meeting that Andersen had been activated and Mercedes back on the DL with a "nagging calf injury"

- Ping, it sounds very much like it's going to be a monsoon in Peoria tomorrow with 1-2 inches of rain predicted. Not sure how that will affect the rotation, but perhaps that will push Shafer far enough so you'll get a chance to see him. Normally the husband and I make it up to Beloit for a couple of games, but he has to work this weekend, so won't be happening for us this series.

- Think it got mentioned elsewhere, but pretty sure I heard Len and Bob mention Z would be pitching in Clearwater on the broadcast tonight. bah!

Coleman rebounded tonight after two straight blah outings, going 6 scoreless and giving up 2 hits, 3 walks, and striking out.

Tennessee still managed to lose 1-0. Bummer.

Matt Camp homered for the Iowa Cubs to tie it. Then they had the winning run on 3rd base with nobody out, but Jake Fox, Nate Spears, and Mark Johnson couldn't drive him home.

Then the Cubs get the lead - again from a Matt Camp hit. Then Kevin Hart proceeds to lose the game for them. Frustrating game.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand Kevin Hart blows it in the bottom of the 10th despite the I-Cubs taking the lead in the top of the 10th.

My sentiments exactly.

Given how Hart's pitched this season, him blowing it was to be expected.

I am almost glad that happened, because he is likely the next candidate to get called up. Hopefully Lou/Hendry see this and decide to call someone else up when they want another bullpen arm.

Fox(I guess I dont have to say Jake Fox any more as hes the only one left) with a second 2 run blast. Too bad the guy cant play 3rd, at least competantly.

If he could play any position(s) competantly (1B, 3B, OF, C, 2B) he would have probably forced his way onto the roster by now. I really don't think we will see him on the 25 at all this year unless we have a lot of guys go to the DL, at the same time. My gut feeling is he will be up in Sept. when rosters expand and he might get a shot at the 25 man next year.

I really doubt he's the next likely candidate to get a callup. His numbers have just been abysmal this season.

Damn, when I last checked the Iowa score, it was 12-5. Kevin Hart has really blossomed into something awful, although it was more Wadell and Estrads fault. Still, I know its not a popular sentiment, but when it comes to the minor leagues, Im more interested in indivisual player stats than the W/L, such as Foxes 3-4 2 HR 5 RBI performance. Too bad Jeff Stevens gave up his first earned run of the year.

I have to assume he was basing that comment on something that Iowa's pitching coach said a couple days ago - Something about how Stevens needs to improve his secondary pitches before they send him up and how Hart's secondary pitches will be what allows him to be called up soon.

Jose Valdez reached via HBP and then stole 2nd, 3rd and home.

Definitely not something you see every day.

How about twice in one day? Werth did it for the Phillies in the 7th inning last night. The only difference was that he reached on a single.

Raisin, this look right to you?

Peoria's rotation for the next 5 days:

Wed-Carpenter

Thurs-Archer

Fri-Shafer

Sat-TBD (Hatley would only be on 3 days rest)

Sun-Hatley

Mon-Bristow

I know I won't see Carpenter or Archer on Sat/Sun, part of me is hoping for a rainout pushing Shafer's start instead of a spot start.

No.

Wed - Beliveau

Thur - Carpenter

Fri - Archer/Cabrera

Sat - Shafer

Sun - Hatley

Mon - Bristow/Beliveau

But the rain will mix that all up tonight.

I figure there are a lot of people out there who are fans of the team and want to see them win. Dont get me wrong, Id rather they win than lose, but if they lose, its not going to ruin my night, especially if our key guys down there have a nice game.

There probably are a lot of fans in the area of those teams that care about record, but I don't think most people on this board care too much at all. Most of the time people don't look at the standings until it is close to the end of the half/year just to see if those teams are in playoff contention or not. I couldn't tell you the record or what place any of the minor league teams are in.

i check these threads and the box scores every day and i could almost never tell you who actually won the game(s).

For us, it's more about individual results than anything else. If you really want to get an idea of how good a prospect is, you have to focus on stats that are mostly under that prospect's control while putting aside stats that can be heavily context-sensitive. For example, a lot of what goes into a pitcher's ERA is the defense behind him. When you compare the quality of defenses in the majors compared with the quality of defenses in the minors, the difference is night and day. ERA is deceiving in the minors simply because the quality of fielding is, in reality, not that good. Another example would be RBIs for hitters. Yes, people like that stat as a measure of clutch hitting, but in the minors, the quality of offense is also fairly low compared to the majors. With a fantastic prospect like, say, Matt LaPorta, he played on a AAA team (Columbus) that featured hitters who were getting regular ABs despite hitting for batting averages under .200 with OBPs under .300. Because his teammates aren't getting on base, he's not going to rack up as many RBIs as you'd expect.

So, take those context-dependent numbers with a grain of salt.
