This is part of the problem with "This Time It Counts." Fans have an incentive to vote for crappy players from the other league.

I have increasingly willed myself to care less and less about the legitimacy or honor or whatever else of the all star game, allowing it to be a minimally fun exhibition to talk about.

Life has been better ever since :)

I hope they can do it. That would be hilarious.

No, we DON'T want that. That would reduce the NL's chances of winning and, therefore, the Cubs' chances of having home field advantage in the Series. We want that to happen for AL players, not Milledge.

That'd be funny if all fans actually did this and the All-star game became a game for bench players and AAA all-starts (at least for the first couple of innings).

Whatever...the NL loses every year anyways. I'd rather just see it happen and see the MLB flip out about it.

Hopefully it would bring about some sort of change to the systems.

It's not like the Cubs are going to make the World Series in our lifetimes anyway. The point is pretty moot.

Just making the World Series would give me a massive coronary, I'm not sure the outcome would even matter.

I don't get why everyone wants it changed.

The players vote in the NFL and they are probably worse at picking the best players than the fans.

The sportswriters are so on top of things that, for example, here in Tampa the local writers voted Jason Bartlett the team MVP of the Rays last year.

Fans make some dumb picks but overall they do OK and from a standpoint of generating a lot of interest in the game the best way is by letting the customers decide who can play. All the starters are out after 3 innings anyway.

We would sweep, so I'd rather have the middle three games. :)

The problem with the fans voting is that unlike with other sports' all-star games, the MLB All-Star game counts toward HFA in the World Series. Most fans just vote for players they recognize or players on their team.

I will tell you something that would be better then Lastings getting in....

how about Manny getting the fans vote. Akward.

That would be awkward...starting of of lastings, manny and soriano

It wouldn't matter to you because you'd be dead of a heart attack. :D

The bigger question for me is when will an All Star manager appoint all his own player as bench players, and then manage it like a real game?

You can't tell me that if the Phillies are still in first place come All Star break, Charlie Manual wouldn't at least seriously consider it.

Fine, that is probably true, but the NFL players have shown that they also pretty much are as bad as the fans when it comes to voting for guys with big names or reputations, probably worse. I have no reason to believe that MLB players would be any better so scratch players voting as an improvement over the fans.

The baseball writers have shown from their hall of fame voting that for the most part they also don't really have a clue so I don't think turning it over to them would be much of an improvement either.

IMO opinion none of the "mainstream" options are going to consistently provide better results than the fans and there is no way that MLB powers that be would ever turn it over to a statistical type selection process (at least one that uses worthwhile statistics) so they may as well just keep doing it the way they are because it is the best way to ensure interest among the common fan.

You may be right on that. The number one change that needs to be made, though, is to quit deciding home field advantage through the All-Star Game.

I could care less if the ASG was nothing more than an exhibition. But since I hate that HFA in the World Series is decided by the All-Star game, I think something like this would help to get rid of that.
