I really don't know what to make of this game. Both teams were really tired. NU didn't play well at all, and yet they're about to pick up a quality road win on short rest. They're going to go to 6-1 with 4 non-conference games left before Big Ten season starts: NC A&T, North Florida, Stanford, and Central Connecticut State. That's a real chance of going 10-1 heading into Big Ten play with two more non-cons later in the year (Texas-Pan American and Chicago State). It's just a shame the students won't be at those games.

I can't believe how you guys are doing without Coble. Kudos to Carmody.

Same. I'm still not sure they have enough for a run to the tourney, but what they did in Chicago, was pretty stunning.

It's about progression of the non-centers. Michael Thompson is stepping up and playing like he's capable of. Nash is playing like a senior. Shurna is gaining confidence and really starting to realize his ability. And even though Crawford is really struggling with the offense, the other true freshman, Marcotullio, has stepped up big time not only on offense, but also on defense and crashing the boards.

The problem is that when we lost Jeff Ryan, we lost another guy who could help give Thompson a few minutes of rest every game. Baring foul trouble, Thompson is going to play 40 minutes a night and that's a cause for concern.

And then there's the center position, where both true sophomores, Rowley and Mirkovic, have regressed. They're offensive liabilities out there. There's talent, but they just don't seem to be comfortable with the ball at all right now. Then again, Rowley broke his foot in August and wasn't medically cleared until a week before the season started.

Michigan State is not playing like a team deserving to be in the top 20 and I'm not just talking about this game. Something is amiss. They will likely get it together though. Too much talent to not especially with the experience they have.

It's anecdotal, but I feel like Izzo's teams always start slow, somewhat by design, as he shakes out his roster to be ready for tournament time.
