I would like to see Fox get more than 1 AB a game with how hot he is but there's no way he's playing in the field.

now thats a bad idea.

why's that? because fox will cost runs defending? of course he will, but he's also seeing the ball really well so you might as well try to ride that. if you call him up and he goes hitless for 3 games then it's back to the minors for him.

playing reed johnson against RHP isn't exactly a bang-up idea either.

It's a total joke if they don't DL someone by tomorrow. Three to four guys on the shelf with no definite timeline for coming back? Key players no less?

DL bradley, call up fox, play fox at 1B and hoffpauir in RF. God-awful defense but they'll at least score some runs.

Fox plays outfield and both corner infeild positions, so why not put Fox in RF and Hoff at first where hes competant, so were limited to only 1 defensive liability.

Is Fox any good though? He's old for the minors and he hits for power but he also strikes out a crap ton which puts him in that Jason Dubois/Brad Eldred/Justin Leone territory of AAAA players.

Maybe he could be the next JEAH CUSSED but Fox doesn't take the similar boatload of walks.

I think the sentiment is that Fox is a streaky hitter who's borderline AL bench material, and while he's scorching hot some are hoping to ride that for some MLB productivity.

Fox had a grand total of 4 games at 3B in the minors... unless there's a plethora of extended spring training games I'm missing here, he isn't really a backup there. He's not a backup catcher either, but he does get a bit of value added from the fact that he's a more than adequate emergency catcher... especially considering the current situation of our team, with our real backup catcher being our emergency 3B.

Yes, he was old for the league last year... but he did absolutely rake at AA. And he has been ridiculously good at AAA this season. Hendry made a comment after his Iowa trip that Fox was doing a much better job hitting the breaking ball... which may be enough to turn him into more than a one dimensional slugger.

All in all, given the way our roster is hurting right now, and the progress he's shown the last couple of years... we'd be remiss not to give him a bench slot when one of DLee, Aramis, or Bradley is DL'd in the very near future.

the impression i've gotten from scouting reports is that fox would be a disaster at every position at 1B, where he'd merely be bad because you don't have to do much.

True. But unless you want Johnson facing righties then you compound the bad defense by putting Hoff in RF. Now you have 2 butchers in the field, not to mention an adamant Lou saying it will never happen again. That would just be ugly and the offensive contributions of the two could very well lag behind their defensive detriments. Therefore, Fox would have to start over Hoff at 1B to get his at bats, and even against lefties I don't think Lou does it. However, if Fox was called up I would start him against lefties until Lee gets back. The kids hot, it's worth a shot. If there are no lefties you put the better bat in there (Hoff) and see if Fox can be a productive PH for whatever stretch of games.

Yeah, Fox doesn't really have any business in the OF corners either... but then again, neither did Hoff, and that didn't stop Lou til he'd seen why for himself. If we do call Fox up, I wouldn't be too shocked to see him get one start in RF... maybe two if they didn't hit any balls at him the first game.

But given our likely offensive struggles with Bradley, DLee, and Aramis riding the pine, Reed Johnson being forced into action against RHP, a dazed and confused Soriano, Soto struggling, little Mikey Fontenot adjusting to the steady diet of breakers he's been getting, and Aaron Miles being allowed to carry a bat... we need to bring up Fox to squeeze as much as we can out of a 1B platoon with Hoff.

God bless Theriot and Fukudome right now.

How true is your last line? Sad, sad state of affairs on the Cubs right now when that's the case.
