...and where in fourth place, 4 games back and sitting at .500.

We can't hit, we're injury prone, our pitching is adequet at best, our bull-pen is pretty bad, our starters are hit or miss for the most part, our bench is terrible.

We don't have much room down, so lets hope we start heading up.

16 game standings for playoff teams last year:

PHI: 8-8

TB: 7-9

LAD: 7-9

BOS: 11-7

LAA: 11-7

CHW: 10-6

CHC: 10-6

MIL: 10-6

WE'RE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMED

What you've posted has proved nothing.

Phillies -- They could hit. DLee is doing about as well as he's going to for the foreseeable future.

TB -- Might have been the best rotation in baseball, and had really young players that were adjusting.

LAD -- Might have been the best rotation in the NL, and had really young players that were adjusting.

Now, with Z, Harden and Marshall, you never know which pitcher is going to show up, we don't have any youngsters that we're hoping will get better, and we aren't extremely young either.

We miss DeRosa and Wood more than I ever thought we would.

I hope we get better, but it's not going to surprise me if the Cards run away from the division.

were 4 games back. theres over 5 months of baseball left to play. Our starters have been great, aside from Zambrano who will pull it together. our bats will wake up. every team goes through this kind of stretch. Its frusterating when it happens, but it will end. I hate to see the Cardinals this hot, but right now, this is their turn. There pitching and defense will do them in.

do we really need a new we suck type thread everytime we lose a game? can we not condense these into one thread?

I think the early season pessimism is compounded by the crappy off season the Cubs just had.

If by "compounded" you mean "justified", I agree.

Bradley is the main problem here. Not his slow start, the fact that hes active. Hes obviously injured, and needs time off. Meanwhile, we have the hottest hitter in all of the minor leagues. Granted he cant play defense, but at this point, neither can Bradley. So who would you rather have, the hot hand or the slumping injured guy?

Whichever.

Each starter had one bad start, and this early in the season, thats going to show on the stats.

dempster didn't just have one bad start. he's just been not good.

I can't watch the games this season, and as yet, I'm not unhappy about this fact.

It WILL get better, but whether it gets good enough early enough to make a difference is what I worry about.

Will the bats heat up enough to start raking in the teams who are stealing a march at the moment? Will the starters perform well enough to back them when they do?

with 90% of a season left to go, you never know whats going to happen. Maybe St. Louis is for real. maybe not. maybe the Pirates are for real. maybenot.

the one thing we can get out of this is that if the Cubs dont make the playoffs, this could well be the end of the Hendry/Piniella era.

From this morning's Trib re: the losing streak:

Reed Johnson: "For us, you feel like it's almost a playoff atmosphere every time out".

This whole problem is psychological. Once they realize this isn't the playoffs, they'll start hitting again.

Kidding aside, it's too early to panic. The cubs have had several minor injuries, and right now they're slumping. Hard. That is compounded by the fact that they are presently playing the hottest team in the NL.

Over the past 7 days:

Cubs: .241/.306/.295

Cards: .341/.412/.518

As much as it sucks to be totally outmatched by a division rival, at this early stage both teams have yet to regress to our respective means.

its also too early to take the cardinals seriously.

Oh, no it's not. Everyone in their lineup will hit over .300 like they are now. Their team ERA is bound to remain at 3.50 for the remainder of the season. That's really good, but then I expect nothing less of players exposed to LaRussa and Duncan. I just wonder how they failed to do that last year.

You mean when they won 86 games in an awesome division?

The Cardinals rotation is Wainwright, Lohse who just hurt his knee, and pray for rain. Unless they pick up Halladay, there's not much to worry about.

you're leaving out wellemeyer, who was legitimately good last year and seems to be magically flourishing there, so i wouldn't write him off as "pray for rain." pineiro isn't good and boggs is terrible, but if carpenter comes back after the all star break that's four above-average starters. plus they do have a pretty good minor league system now and can make a trade if they're in contention.
