Im coming down Sat afternoon and staying here http://www.wyndham.com/hotels/STLMF/main.wnt. Im coming to town for State Bowling Tourney in Collinsville on Sunday, and was hoping to go to the game but wasnt able to get tickets. So instead we are planning on just going out around the stadium to the bars and such.

You can try in get the first pitch tickets Saturday morning. They start selling the tickets at 9 AM the day of the game. It costs $11 for a voucher for 2 tickets. You have no idea where your tickets will be until you enter the stadium. You'll probably want to get in line a couple of hours early, and you'll probably end up with SRO. At least you'll be in the stadium though.

I'll be at the game Friday for sure, and might stop by Saturday and Sunday after the start of the games and see if I can scalp some cheap tickets.

Yea there will be 5 of us, and we could get SRO on stubhub right now for like 20-25 a pc, but I cant seem to justify paying that price for a no seat, and then pay $8 or whatever it is for a beer. For that price Id rather just watch the game on a big screen at a bar with beer half that price. If some seats opened up Id be willing to pay for them, but not for SRO. Anywhere youd recommend to watch the game at? Ill be the only Cubs fan amongst 4 other damn Cards fans. Looks like the weather is going to be perfect down there this weekend.

Oh and thanks for the suggestion on the "1st pitch tickets" but we wont be getting into STL till around noon-1 Sat.

We're driving down to Springfield Friday night after work and staying with family. Then the plan is to leave early enough on Saturday morning to hit the Missouri Botanical Garden and then the zoo before the game. The St. Louis Zoo has five Amur (Bengal) Tiger cubs that the girlfriend wants to see. Supposedly they're make-you-puke cute. :glare:

Then I guess we're going to try that deep dish pizza place in the Delmar Loop that President Obama likes.

Then hopefully we'll have enough time to check into the hotel before the game. We're staying at the Hotel Lumiere. http://www.lumiereplace.com/hotel.aspx

Where are you going to be? By the stadium or will you be more mobile?

I believe our hotel is within walking distance of the stadium. Its on St Charles St. Would prefer to stay on foot, or cab(or any other public trans) . My group of guys going with me range from 29-33 in age if that helps.

There's a place called Jack Patricks about 2 blocks from the hotel. Nothing fancy and their drink prices are good.

There's a fancy upscale sports bar on the Landing called Skybox. Kind of pricey but they've got a crapload of HDTVs. It's the other direction from the stadium though.

Avoid: J. Bucks, Mike Shannon's, Al Hrabosky's and Paddy O's. If you're looking close to the stadium try Kilroy's.

Ok thanks, any particular reason to avoid those places? Like I said Im going with a group of Stl fans, so if they want to go to one of those places I need a good excuse not to. Any places down there you'd recommend to eat at also?

1) They charge obnoxious ballpark prices for their drinks.

2) They're filled with obnoxious Cardinals fans.

A fair amount of people will avoid those places. When I was posted to St. Louis last year most of the locals I worked with hated the bars I listed.

There's a good cajun place by the ballpark called Broadway Oyster Bar that has good food. The Jack Patricks bar has good burgers.

Along Washington Ave are some good restaurants and bars. There's a few places along there and they've got shuttles that run to Busch. There's an authentic Irish bar called Dubliner that I ate at a lot when stuck down there. I also liked the food at Side Bar.

Most other stuff downtown St. Louis is either fast food or fine dining. Outside of downtown I can also recommend some places if you want them.

Going Friday and Sunday. Saturday, I might go if I feel like getting in for free and laughing at those who pay for tickets (me on Friday and Sunday...)

Then hopefully we'll have enough time to check into the hotel before the game.

Is that a euphemism? I think I could "check into the hotel" in less than five minutes if I had too.

Game starts at 3pm but the hotel check-in time is 4pm so I hope they'll let me check in early. Most of the time it's not a problem, but I got burned in Indianapolis a couple of years ago before a Bears game where the hotel wouldn't let us check in an hour or two early. While we were at the football game someone broke into our car.

Plus I know how the girlfriend operates and she'll want to change clothes and freshen up. ](*,)

Yup same situation. Im going to be pissed if we cant check in at 1 30 or so when we get to the hotel. All we need to do is drop off our clothes, and then head to the bar for the 3pm game, hopefully there will be no problems.

I think I'm going to try the first pitch thing this Saturday. Have you had much success with it?

I've only done it once. We went to a thursday day game against the Royals last year. We got to the stadium at 9, there was a long line but plenty of left over tickets. From talking to the security guards and other people in the line, they said it was the longest the line has ever been, besides for a Cubs game. They said for Cubs games people usually start showing up around 6 AM. Also from talking to the other people it doesn't matter what voucher number you get or if you are in the front of the line to enter the stadium, the tickets you get are completely random. They've been in the front of the line and gotten SRO, but a person behind them got seats. The main reason to get in line before the game early is to make sure you are in the stadium before first pitch, since they don't open the gate until 10 min. before gametime. Generally the tickets you get are SRO, the tickets the visiting team gave back, or tickets a big group gave back up in the nose bleeds, but I have heard of people getting seats behind home too (could just be a rumor). I would almost guarantee you get SRO for Cubs game. When we went to the Royals game we got SRO and so did everybody else we saw waiting in line, but we were able to find empty seats down low. One nice thing they did was walk through the line with that days giveaway for those that wanted it.

We had a good time yesterday's game but were stuck behind some southern Illinois redneck Cubs fans who were making complete a**es of themselves. Shirts off, cursing, drinking, yelling at women and arguing with Cardinals fans. It was really embarrassing. You'd think they were Sox fans by the way they acted.

Had a good time in St. Louis except for the constant 30mph winds all weekend. The zoo was nice and I got a lot of great pictures at the Botanical Garden. Plus my good mood was helped by a nice run at the casino and the craps table. It paid for the weekend. \:D/

Yea I had a blast this weekend in St Louis, minus the whole game thing on Saturday. Got to Stl Sat afternoon and we walked up to the ticket office at like 1 30 and we were able to get 5 tickets in Sect 237 Row 2 for $48 bucks. I was shocked. 1st time inside the new Busch and I liked it for the most part. Prices are absolutey criminal inside that place though, and the seats are awfully cramped. The view from the seats were very good though, and the people around me treated me pretty good even though I was the only Cub fan in the area. I dont know if its just a 1 time thing, but seems like they need to hire some more beer vendors. We were sitting for over 2 innings(long innings) waiting for a beer vendor to appear. Ive never had that problem at Wrigley.

After the game we went to Sho-mees(sp) and the food was fantastic, as well as the uhh view :D The fries at that place are unbelievable. Beer prices werent bad either, we got a 34oz draft(Miller Light) for 7 bucks. Not bad considering we paid 7.75 for a 16oz beer inside Busch. After we ate we went down to the Landing and went to a bar called Big Daddys. We had a blast here. Lots of people, lots of women, and plenty of alcohol. Had a real good time all night, except for 1 of the bars telling me my shorts were too long so I couldnt pass their dress code. Pretty stupid I had cargo khaki shorts on and they were bout even with my knees but whatever.

Overall for my 1st time in Stl in well over 10 years, I had a blast and will definately be going back again.

That happens at most place when they go with a new building: got to pay for it somehow.

I asked a vendor about the same thing. Apparently a bunch of them quit over the price increases along with the downsizing of the beers and lower commissions for them. He was guessing that in this economy there's plenty of people wanting jobs and the Cards management is squeezing the employees to bring in new/cheaper ones.

I don't notice that prices are any higher than other places. The beers are cheaper at Wrigley, but it memory serves the cups are smaller.

As for it being cramped, I agree. They definitely got every seat in there that they could. And no advertising possibility was ignored. Just like the old place, there are ads everywhere you look. I guess most places are that way now, it just seems like they take it to the extreme.

Of course it was a Southern Illinois redneck, oh high and mighty one.

I had a blast on Sunday, glad I missed the other two games. Late in the game, I had a Card fan yelling at me, he kept asking if I was from Chicago. I just smiled, but he kept talking [expletive]. He was a tough guy till I jacked his ass up outside the stadium. Wife is still giving me the cold shoulder.

One of the dudes kept complaining about the long drive back to DuQuoin and another was complaining about a Pinckneyville cop who hated him. Look the towns up on a map.

The beer was 16oz which is either the same as Wrigley or smaller. For 7.75 thats crazy. But even the "hot dogs" and other food were pretty ridiculous.

16oz in Madison Square Garden are $9 now.

The new Yankee Stadium is about the worst.

That's why I'm rethinking my stance on a new Wrigley.
