what a weird way of phrasing that question

miles would probably be my first "deletion"

wouldn't even be in my top 5.

ooooh...i am intrigued...spill the beans!

Miles, agreed.

2nd choice? Sorry, but I'd have to say Fukudome, at least at this particular moment in time.

My desire to undo the deletion of Mark DeRosa will be heavily dependent on both the number of games Bradley is able to play, and his performance when he does play.

If deleting a player includes deleting his salary obligation then Miles is an odd choice because as a back up infielder making relatively low salary the overall impact he would have on the team versus whatever middle infield replacement the Cubs get plus what improvements they are able to make with the saved payroll dollars would be minimal.

To me it would be Fukudome. I don't think he is the worst player on the team but the Cubs could most easily replace his production and getting the salary flexibility back from wiping out his contract would give them the opportunity to make a major upgrade somewhere else.

Lee and Soriano are other options, but I think both are better bets to produce high quality offensive numbers in the next couple years and therefore more likely to "earn" their 2009 and 2010 salaries versus whoever the Cubs could get to replace them with the dollars saved.

Soriano

Fukudome

Dempster

Lee

Vizcaino

If salary is included I'd be hard pressed to not delete Fukudome. Lee would be a close second and Soriano third.

Otherwise, Miles, Gathright and Vizcaino are all excellent candidates to go away.

it is entirely possible that the Cubs end up regretting Z's deal as much or more than Soriano's. I'm not predicting that at this point, but I think there's significant risk there simply based off the fact that Z is a pitcher. Add in the declining performance and amount of wear and tear and I think it is pretty close to a tossup which contract stands a bigger chance to be an albatross.

I'll go short term and say Vizcaino so that we can more easily keep Guzman and Patton.

Even though I think he's going to rebound and have a decent year in 2009, Fukudome would be my pick (assuming contract counts).

Since there is no designation saying it has to be current Cubs I'll go with Neifi Perez.

"Off of the Cubs" does imply that the player must be current. You can't delete something from a paper on MS Word that's not there anymore, for example.

But I support the sentiment.

From that point of view, if we were taling about deleting from recent Cubs history, Id go with Alex Gonzalez. Had he not bobbled that routine grounder just after a more infamous play that ill fated October 2003 evening, things may have turned out differently.
