Yeah, Liriano definitely doesn't lose an exemption year because he didn't play at all. I think BJ Upton missed a whole year also. I'm just not sure about partial playing time. I think today will probably grind to a halt at some point anyway, so you might want to just wait until you can get an official ruling from Juan. Maybe send him a PM or an email.

I'm seriously willing to go out on a limb to say Choo has an exemption left.

 

Prospects will be cap-exempt for three years. A year is a season in which a player has 50 or more plate appearances, 5 pitching starts, or 10 total appearances.

 

Since 2 of his years do not meet the exemption loss requirements, he has to have one left. It's been asked before and that was the ruling, so I'll throw my ass out there on this one if I'm wrong.

Yeah, the wording there makes a pretty strong case that Choo still has an exemption left.

You can use me as a witness in small claims court. Or, we can all go over to Juan's house and beat him up.

 

ETA: If those years with less than 50 at bats are going to count against a player who has already lost rookie eligibility, then we need to add that to the rules for clarification.

I vote that he's exempt.

I can't agree to that.. :) I think you have ample support here though that says the people agree he's exempt. I haven't gotten a response back from Juan yet.

 

Do you want to wait to make it final until I get the clarification?

Wow. And I thought it was painful only having 1 pick of the first 46. I've made 3 picks now and have 2 more coming soon, and you still will not have picked your 2nd. Ouch!

I'm 99.9999999999999999999999% sure that Choo would still be exempt. The three exempt years are the first three years that the player has more than the specified number of plate appearances or pitching appearances. Nothing in the rule says that the exempt years have to be consecutive years.

I was really thinking of Choo with my 4th rounder because I thought he would have the exempt year.
