Thinking about creating a similar site to MLBTR.com

I am thinking about making a website that is similar to mlbtraderumors.com. I felt I would run it by here first to see if you guys think it is a good idea? What does MLBTR do that you like/don't like? What would you change/keep the same? Are there certain websites/news outlets that you would like to get cited more/less? Any input would be great.

In my experience of making websites for things that there are already top notch websites for, particularly band fansites, it's better to just not waste your time. Besides, if you do a poor job, you will get disrespected and first time visitors will never come back. MLBTR, despite all its criticisms, does a fantastic job of posting rumors from newspapers all over the country almost every day, and practically all day too. Unless you've got that kind of time to compete, then there's no reason for anyone to visit your site if they can get faster news updates from them.

MLBTR was a joke when it first started. Dude just made stuff up and posted it to get hits. Now its apparently a good source, but I still have a hard time believing what is posted there because of the early days.

It's become a very respectable site, and there is potential for them to be even better.

Yeah, Dierkes has done a pretty good job at making it legit. He posts links to all rumors, and they usually come from actual sources like beat writers for newspapers.

The site is decent and a definite improvement from the early days when he would let people email him rumors. He had a lot of bad information in those days. I think he learned his lesson and improved it.

 

Back to the original poster's question. If he has a lot of time to mine the internet, radio, message boards, newspapers, etc and compile all the relevant rumors, then go for it. But to have a good site for that, it would take some time.
