Mark me down as one who thought it as overspending at the time, but a necessary overspending to get the kind of player who could help them turn the corner. I think.

I still feel that way. No way this team builds to what it is over the last two years without Sori. Overpending? Yes. Worth it to the Cubs? Every penny.

Bringing in Lou,Lilly Marquis etc. was a big part also. Carlos Lee at 6/100 would have worked also.

That's more or less how I thought of it. But, it was because Hendry did such a piss poor job with the lineup in general and the outfield in particular before that. But no, it hasn't come close to being worth every penny and it never will. Soriano hasn't been that big of a difference maker.

Lilly? Yes.

Lou? Perhaps.

Marquis? No.

How is Soriano not productive? And how do you know he's not going to have his best year as a Cub? If Soriano plays 140+ games he will no doubt have his best year as a Cub. That is a big "if" but its possible. Its just surprising how many people on this board jumped for joy when Soriano was signed, then get all geeked when he has a good game and goes on one of his hot streaks but then turn their back on him and say he's worthless when the season is over. So i'm guessing if soriano hits over .300 40hr 100+ RBIs with 20+SB .360OBP next yr that contract is till not good for you. Oh wait maybe you'll use the excuse that he's old at 32yrs old or past his prime, or maybe that he's just not good anymore.

Wow, you seriously believe that could happen? The guy has only hit .300 once, 40+ HR once and 100+ RBI twice. That was all a few years ago, there's no chance that'll happen again.

I think its unlikely but by no means impossible for Sori to put up these #'s. The only thing that seems crazy is the 100+ rbi giving his spot in the lineup.

While Marquis wasn't great,23 wins in two years and taking the ball every fifth day wasn't too bad. The number of starters tried in 2006 made the signing of an inning eater a must.

Except for the fact that he was well on his way to 100 RBI last year. 75 RBI in 109 games is easily on pace to break 100.
