I hate to go off topic here in the "Brett Favre thread"....

According to a report in the Newark Star-Ledger, free-agent tight end Michael Gaines is scheduled to visit the Bears on Thursday. Gaines, who was cut by the Detroit Lions after this year's draft, worked out for the Jets on Wednesday.

The Bears are looking for help at receiver, but Gaines is more of a blocking tight end. The Bears don't appear to need much help at the position anyway with Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark. The status of second-year man Kellen Davis appears to be a question mark, so maybe the Bears are hoping Gaines could step into the role as the third tight end.

Why is Kellen Davis a question mark?

I've heard nothing about that. Maybe the Bears just want another body to take some training camp reps.

“Not often do you see quarterbacks who can make the tough throws without their feet being in a perfect position, and he’s one of those guys. That’s not something that you can teach or work on out on the field during a drill session. That’s just a gift that he has the ability with his arm talent just to make some amazing throws.”

He's likely to lose fewer and win more. Cutler is a great QB entering his prime, while Favre is a once great QB well out of his prime.

Oh he is?

Jay Cutler's a much better quarterback than Favre is right now. Don't let your Favre love get to your brain that much.

Did I ever say Favre is a better QB?

Im saying Favre this year has a better chance of winning with the Vikings then Cutler with the Bears.

What did you mean by your question then?

Because you don't understand that Brett Favre isn't that good anymore.

His stats last year before he got hurt would disagree.

And for the 300th time, he would not be throwing the ball 30 times a game. He will get defenders out of the box and Peterson will rush for 1800 yards. He does'nt even have to have a better year then Cutler stat wise.

How do you come to that conclusion? If Cutler is a better QB than Favre, that means the Bears improved more than the Vikings in the offseason. There was only one game of difference between the two teams last year.

Little separation between the teams plus the Bears being more improved than the Vikings leads to Minnesota being more likely to win this year? I don't understand.

Will he be healthy this year? Is he passed the strained biceps muscle? At 40 is he that unlikely to get hurt again? These are questions that must be taken into account.

As hard as this is to believe though, the Bears probably had a better QB situation last year than the Vikings. So did they really improve more?

I paid attention to the Jets all year, he wasn't good. He had one big game, and maybe one or two other good ones. But he stunk before he got hurt. He hasn't been good for years.

Absolutely. They went from a halfway decent QB who, if all goes well, won't lose you games, to a guy that can win games. The Vikings got a QB that will lose them games, repeatedly. Chicago relied on their defense and running game to make up for a lacking passing game, and stood toe to toe with Minnesota all season. Cutler makes the Bears defense better, Favre will not make the Vikings defense better.

As goony said, the Bears had an average QB and now have a top 5-8 QB in the league. The Vikings had a below average QB situation and (assuming they sign Favre) now have an average QB. Plus, Favre will likely lose a couple of games for the Vikings while Cutler likely won't.

Aside from assuming Favre stays healthy and somehow reverses the downward spiral of his career at 40, anybody saying that move makes the Vikings clear favorites over the Bears has to assume that the oft-injured Adrian Peterson will also stay completely healthy this year. The notion that Favre would come in and throw 20 times a game is a joke. If they go through the trouble of acquiring Favre, you better believe they are going to put the ball in his hands quite a bit. Favre isn't going to change who he is, and Brad Childress, of all people, does not have the ability to pull in the reins on anybody of Favre's stature.

Just because Cutler is a better QB doesn't mean Favre can't have a better year. Favre has more to work with around him, and he isnt going to be asked to more then what Cutler is going to be asked to do. I belive the Bears overachived last year, and their core players on defense are getting older and might be losing a step (see Urlacher, Brian).

No, the fact that Favre isn't good and is very old and injury prone is the reason he can't have a better year.

Favre is 1-5 in his last 6 games vs the Bears, with the one win coming on the New Years Eve game where the Bears had nothing to play for. I hope to hell he does go to Minnesota.

His last 6 games have will have no effect on how he plays against them this year. He is also 22-10 in his career against the Bears.

His last 6 games are a much better indicator in how he will play than what he did in his 20's and early 30's. I welcome his return if only to improve the Bears record against him.
