Cross Haynesworth off the list as he's headed to Washington when free agent opens.

Where did you hear that?

per Rotoworld:

Citing a "very well-connected league source," Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle reports that Albert Haynesworth will sign with the Redskins at the start of free agency unless the Titans swoop in late.

Zierlein, the son of Steelers OL coach Larry Zierlein, has a blog at Chron.com and does a radio show. His source says Haynesworth will get a deal totaling roughly $100 million that pays $15-16 million annually. Zierlein doesn't usually report and it's hard to see how the Skins will fit him under the salary cap, but this is the kind of megadeal Haynesworth is seeking.

Wow, can't blame the Titans for not matching that, though. I don't know that I'd pay Albert $15-16 million a year and I really wouldn't give him more than 3-4 years.

As much as I love Haynesworth, if this is the deal he's getting he can move on. The Redskins will hate that contract in about 3-4 years, though, I suspect.

Depends on the signing bonus.

True. That's still a whole heck of a lot for Albert. He's an awesome player (best DT in the game, probably), but he's had some commitment issues (that he's probably over, but I'm not certain) and is 28. I wouldn't go more than 4 years, $12 million a year, probably.

so what? we're out of luck? no impact free agents this offseason when there were a ton out there?

i still don't know how the panthers are retaining both gross and peppers, they got a freaking miracle. now we really have no way to improve the team. let's start rebuilding.

i would assume the 15-16 per includes the signing bonus.

Yes, but the signing bonus is all that is guaranteed. So it could 1 bazillion dollars over 100 years and it wouldn't matter if the signing bonus was like $3 million, they could cut him the day after they signed him and only have to worry about that $3 mil.

Why are you so hung up on duration? This isn't baseball, if the guy falls apart, you cut him. You don't have to keep paying him if he's no longer worth the money.

True, but if a large part of it isn't signing bonus, then if you cut him you'll have a whole lot of dead salary sitting on your cap.

Snyder can afford to give out massive signing bonuses, but if they don't here it could come back to bite them.

It's the bonus that counts against the cap. If they cut him before the end of the contract, it's only the prorated portion of the signing bonus that is a cap hit (if I'm understanding correctly).

Right, it's the opposite of Dew's concern. You'd prefer no signing bonus, then you can cut him at any time and it doesn't hurt your cap at all. But it's going to be a big one. And the team that signs him will structure it so that they can cut him after the 3rd or 4th year if they have to without killing themselves. Regardless, even if it does blow up, it's going to be a one year problem, the year they take the hit. You really shouldn't care if it's 7 or 8 years, what you should care about is the structure.

Yeah, you two are right - that's what I get for posting in the middle of working.

We'll see how they structure it. If done correctly, they're getting a great player. If not, they'll have a ton of dead space after 3-4 years.

Snyder has proven to be fairly good manipulating the cap, though, I believe.

Yes, but he's also repeatedly screwed up by overpaying for names. The fact that he might sign him makes me rethink my idea that the Bears should.

Very true on overpaying for big names. Haynesworth is well worth signing, I'm just not sure he's worth $15-16 million a year.

I would have been fine with the Titans making him the highest paid defensive player in the league, but that's about the upper limit.

If Haynesworth is indeed headed to Washington, it appears a very, very large amount of his salary will have to be exempt from the salary cap.

The Skins still have one of the worst salary-cap situations in the NFL, although they could be roughly $10 million under the cap by restructuring a few more deals and releasing a player like Shawn Springs. I still cannot see them being in any kind of position to set a spending record on a player like Albert Haynesworth, but we’ll see what we dig up in the next few days.

This is from the National Football Post, and they have the same rumor about Albert heading to Washington. It'll be interesting, I guess. Both stories were from today.

Any interest in Coles?

Jets released WR Laveranues Coles.

Coles' $6 million 2009 salary remains guaranteed, however, and the Jets are open to bringing him back. Coles also seems open to it. "We didn't leave on bad terms," he said. "It's not out of the question that I could come back." Still, Coles wants an extension and the Jets are hesitant to appease him at age 30 with declining long speed. If no reunion is worked out, Coles becomes arguably the No. 2 receiver on the market, behind only T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

I don't want Coles. Never been a big fan. He's clearly lost a step, and isn't a great WR to begin with. If I'm bringing in a WR over 28, he'd better be a great route runner or a difference maker. Coles is not, IMO.
