while it may be disappointing that Babich isnt being completely removed, it is nice to see Lovie taking more control. I'm not sure, after a 0-16 season, Maranelli would have been a good "marketing" stradegy.

The last time Lovie took more control was after the Super Bowl, when he was able to fire a non-Tampa 2 Lovie BFF coordinator in favor of his BFF Babich and have more say on personel matters. That did not work out well.

Well, at least a move like this might mean it's 2009 or bust for Lovie. If this defense remains the mediocre mess it's been the past two years he'll have very few people to blame.

glass 1/2 empty, glass 1/2 full

1. we arent getting rid of lovie this off season

2. at least he is doing **something** to correct his wrong

All he's doing though is more of what he did before (tightening the inner circle of yes men).

I interpret this as meaning that Lovie will actually be the DC, and Babich the LB coach -- only Babich keeps his DC title in order to save face.

Creating a 2 headed monster at DC isn't something I find terribly inspiring. If we're lucky, maybe it opens the door to the Babich firing later on and slide Marinelli in as the DC.

Isn't head coach a busy enough job? Why the heck does Lovie want to add more to his plate? You can't do everything -- first rule of leadership, delegate effectively.

do you honestly believe that anyone (including Babich) will see this move as a vote of confidence for Babich? I think its a politcally safe way of taking the reigns away from him, and while that may or may not have its merits, its better then ignoring the issue.

I dont believe its ideal, but it appears Lovie is aknowledging the obvious

its Lovie's bed and he's laying in it.

I think this moves means that Angelo was going to get rid of Babich and Lovie offered to help him out and take some of the blame if the defense underperforms again. And as Goony said, I think that may mean if they don't perform he will be out with Babich.

But what's the motivation for being politically safe? If it was a political move, they'd fire Babich.

I think he's acknowledging something needs to be done, but my problem is that he's not acknowledging the more important issue, that perhaps there are some flaws in his strategy. He's always said there's nothing wrong with the system, it's a matter of the players playing the system the right way.

That's a good point.

As for Lovie's time requirements, I don't think it changes much. He's now got an asst head coach who was a former head coach and has plenty of NFL experience. I think the DC position is going to be effectively split between Marinelli, Babich and Smith, with the level of input in that order. Aside from time with the media/public appearances, the time Lovie spends at Halas Hall was probably entirely defensive in nature anyway.

i agree, nepitism has its major downsides. the only thing i dont get upset about when i read this kind of stuff is, we arent going to change it this year. this does put Lovie on the hot seat, though, and thats a good thing.

I get the feeling that Babich won't have much say on the defense. Lovie was already calling some of the plays last season. We'll see if Lovie can handle the extra work for the whole season, though.

John Hoke is the new DBs coach. He was the Texans DBs coach the last 7 years.

He actually spells his first name Jon (just like our moderator). He is the brother of Brady Hoke, the former Ball State head coach who recently left for San Diego State. Both Hokes were starters on defense for BSU when I was there as a student, so I'm happy to see him with the Bears.

I heard Warren Sapp on The Score this morning, and he said that he's going to work one-on-one with Tommie Harris starting the Monday after the Super Bowl. I can't recall 100%, but I thought he said Rod Marinelli called him and asked him to contact Tommie.

He also said he wanted to look Tommie right in the eye so he could "see how bad he wants it."

I don't know about the rest of you, but that sounds kind of ominous to me.

They were talking Hoke up in the paper today...but what?

Well that's odd. Why would you accept a position just to interview for another?

If he interviews, fire him. Take a page from BC's book.

Got to agree with Soul here...That's just a douche move. It would have been one thing if he was interviewing for both, but he just accepted the job

douche move? he's clearly doing what is best for him. maybe he wasnt aware he had the opportunity to interview with UCLA until after he accepted the db position. I really dont have an issue with this
