Nothing has been announced yet. Having lost Listach to the Nats, there is an opening at Iowa. I wonder if Ryno will get bumped up to Des Moines?

The Chicago Cubs will announce today that Ryne Sandberg will replace Buddy Bailey as manager of the Smokies, their Class AA farm team in the Southern League. The 49-year-old Sandberg has managed Peoria, the National League team's Class A Midwest League affiliate, the past two years. The Chiefs were 71-68 in 2007 and 60-78 last season. In response to the announcement, one Cub fan responded "I hate Ryne Sandberg.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!"

I was a little put off by Sandberg's presumptuousness after his first year at Peoria, as though one season = "paying his dues" = should be at least a coach with the big club.

I have a feeling things are eventually going to sour when they decide he's never going to make the majors. And I think that's what will happen, because I don't think he has the temperament to be a good manager.

Bailey is headed the wrong way in the system. What's next Peoria?

Chicago Cubs vice president Oneri Fleita, who is in charge of the National League team's minor league farm system, says Tennessee Smokies manager Ryne Sandberg will bring the same kind of daily work ethic to the Southern League team that made him a member of the Hall of Fame.

"He is a super guy," Fleita said. "He approaches managing a ball club nothing any different than when he was a player in the minor leagues. That's why he is a Hall of Famer."

"It was around the time we were going to hire Lou Piniella (as Cubs manager)," Fleita said. "I think he showed interest because he wanted to be on the major league staff."

There are no short cuts in the Cubs' organization, even for Hall of Famers. Sandberg was told he had to pay his dues in the minors.

"In our minds, you have to go back and do it the right way," Fleita said. "Get out there and actually write a lineup, coach third base, throw BP and see what its like to set up the 'D.' Get your feet in it and see if you really like it."

It'll be interesting having a new coach in Peoria again - I was happiest to see Alberto Garcia get a job in the DSL. He played in Peoria for a couple of years and was one of the genuinely nice, good guys. Hopefully we'll get a chance to run into him at Spring Training.

Oh, and BTW, Desi Wilson spent 2008 in Peoria :)
