Jon Heyman speculates that the Cubs are getting involved in talks with Lowe.

The Cubs could become a landing spot for star free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe.

Chicago had been talking seriously to the Padres about trade target Jake Peavy for weeks until pulling out at the winter meetings, and some baseball people think discussions could be revived at some point.

If not, however, Lowe could become a suitable rotation replacement in Wrigley Field. Peavy has $63 million over four years remaining on his contract, and that's very likely Lowe's price tag, as well.

I don't know how true this is.

I would prob. rank in order of how I would like to see the Cubs address it.

Lowe

Sheets

Peavy

If Sheets struggles in the FA market b/c of health concerns, he might be the better bargain if he gets the fewer years and dollars per.

That's like an inverse order of talent. And do you really want to give Lowe the same amount of money as Peavy?

Peavy is going to require more than money. If Peavy was a FA, he would be 1st on my list.

With that said, given the rumors of what it would've req'd to obtain Peavy, Lowe and salary difference. is prob. worth the extra money spent as well as keeping the farm from going bad to one of the worst.

if lowe is in line for $63M over 4 years, count me out. if it's closer to $12M and 3 years or something, that's a lot more reasonable. lowe has always been healthy and relies heavily on ground balls; even though he's heading into his mid-30s he doesn't need velocity as much as a lot of other pitchers, so i wouldn't worry too much about his age.

Face it, this is what your going to have to pay for quality. We're in a baseball world where mediocre players are getting good money, good players are going to get great money, and great players will be able to afford their own small country complete with all of it's residents and resources.

Rotoworld is running with it too. I don't know how much stock I'd put into it though. This is the first I've heard of the Cubs being interested in Lowe.

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Cubs are showing interest in free agent Derek Lowe.

Lowe would prefer to pitch on the East Coast, but if the Yankees and Andy Pettitte can work out their differences, there might not be a AL or NL East contender willing to give him the dollars he wants. The Red Sox have some interest, but would probably offer just three years. The Orioles and Nationals could certainly use him, but Lowe is said to want to join a contender. The Cubs might have a legitimate shot if they're willing to spend $15 million per year. First, they'd likely have to dump Jason Marquis.

Which would be worse for the farm, giving up the pick or giving up crappy prospects?

he is 35 years old and was greatly helped by Dodger Stadium. Pass.

Are you kidding? A ground ball pitcher at Wrigley? Considering all of those wind blowing out home runs that would be lazy fly balls in a lot of stadiums, Id welcome Lowe with open arms.

The past three years home road splits.

Home: ERA 2.95, 320 IP, 283 Hits, 223 SO, 235 BA.

Road: ERA 4.24, 308 IP, 326 Hits, 194 SO, 273 BA.

I don't know why the numbers are so skewed when his HRs allow is basically the same. 23 Road 25 Home.

Based on the splits though I'd be concerned.

I once sat behind Derek Lowe on a flight from LA to Detroit. He was playing Sudoku the whole time.

I sat by Jamie Lynn Sigler in 1st class once. we ended up hooking up several times before I went with my friends back to New York.

You shouldn't have said anything, Turtle.

If Vitters is included, then the farm would take a worse hit b/c there likely won't be anyone signable with the talent of Vitters in the btm 5 of the 1st rd.

I'd take Lowe. Why not? Upgrading is always a good thing, even if what you're upgrading is already a strength.

I take it we're no longer considering Randy Johnson, then?

No, I assume we still like Johnson. You don't no longer consider someone just because you may have interest in another player. It's not like we're on the verge of signing Lowe.
