He would make a nice PH and backup at 1B and OF, but Hoffpauir can fill that role much cheaper.

It's gonna be interesting to see how many guys end up being bargin free agents. I don't remember a year when so many teams were scared to offer big name players arbitration in fear they would have to come back at that price. In most years this would be a no-brainer because a player of Dunn level probably would get at least a 3-4 year deal at 13-15m per year. But with this market looking very bad so far, who knows if a player like Dunn will even get 9-10m per year. Guys like Dunn, Abreu, Ibanez and others might end up settling for alot less then we thought going into the offseason. Unless your CC Sabathia this isn't really a good year to be a free agent.

I remember Vlad only getting 5/70 guaranteed because he hit the market at the wrong time. Most other years he woulda been a 100 mil+ guy.

While he might be a slight upgrade defensively, Hoff can't come close to Dunn offensively. His is way cheaper.

If the Cubs got Dunn(I realize they won't), there's no way he's a PH and backup.

so let's sign him and pretend like we offered wood arbitration and the d'backs offered dunn arbitration

Where was the green font?

I am worried that the Dunn-ophiliacs will be having a stroke knowing he is avaliable

he was already available. he was never going to accept arbitration

In addition, Dunn's price might be dropping in a down market. Two NL officials wondered whether Dunn would command even a Jose Guillen-caliber, three-year, $36 million deal from a team other than Washington.

"[The Nationals] might have to pay a bit of a premium for him to go to a team that has not won recently," one of the executives said.

I read a report earlier this offseason that Dunn wants to play for a contender and was getting serious about his weight and was already working out at some training center. Let's say Dunn's price falls into that Jose Guillen range.

Ibanez- More than likely to get two years similar price/Older/ just as bad in the outfield/ Inferior hitter/draft picks

Bradley- headcase/same price/ injury plagued/draft picks/

Why is he not on are radar?

The Cubs among many other teams don't value his skill set. He's not a good defender and doesn't hit for average. He is a very productive player and I would put him in LF and Soriano in RF and deal with the bad defense.

I agree that Hendry, like most GMs, undervalues his skill set. Kind of a shame as his skill set balances out Soriano's shortcoming with similar power.

We're talking about a Cubs franchise that has run Keith Moreland, Sammy Sosa and more recently Cliff Floyd out to RF. Why would they suddenly think Dunn wasn't good enough to play RF?

I'd rather have Dunn take his bad defense to RF than try to move Soriano there. Soriano despite his adventures is not terrible but merely below avg in LF. I'll take below avg- avg/decent- horrific left to right over horrific- avg/decent- bad.

Not that it matters since Hendry won't sign Dunn. He has a "not clutch" reputation which would eliminate him for the perceived need of LH bat for the playoffs.

I can't believe Dunn is still only 28 years old. It seems like he's been around for longer than that.

The Cubs keep talking about their need for a legit power LH bat. Who are the great options out there that we could sign who are LH, power, + solid defense? That's pretty much a star player -- I fear that we're going to sit on the fence all offseason again, wind up with nothing, when a decent (but not great) option like Dunn was available.

That said, I can see myself being incredibly frustrated watching him play because of his shortcomings. I just don't want to wind up with no improvement at all.

There's always a chance that, if the Cubs do nothing, that the Pie/ Johnson platoon in CF works out and that Fukudome improves. If they don't get the LH bat now, they can probably still be competitive through the 1st half of the season and then add someone at the trade deadline if they feel they need to. What they probably do need to do though is get a RH OF bat to complement Fukudome against LH pitching.

Olney says the Cubs would love to have Adam Dunn in their lineup, but he's a stretch as a full-time right fielder. The Cubs are willing to sacrifice some defense in right, but how much?

Would be nice, I fear the Cubs won't have enough money for him.

If that is the hold up, then that's pretty dumb. Dunn shouldn't play RF with Soriano in the same OF. Any manager who would play Soriano in LF and Dunn in RF should be fired. On the spot.

So you wouldn't want Dunn, or you would want Dunn but put either Soriano or Dunn in another position.

I didn't imply either. I was only saying that RF defense should not factor into whether or not to sign Dunn. LF defense yes, but defense isn't as important in LF as it is in RF.

As to what I would do, if Dunn can be had for 3/36 as was suggested, I do that today, and let Soriano know he's going to be in RF, and Fukudome CF. Our overall defense in the OF takes a hit, but it's worth it.

That's what I though, just wanted to clear that up in my head. I agree with ya!

agreed. soriano can handle RF; he wouldn't be good out there but he's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be (his arm makes up for a lot of the misplays). dunn, on the other hand, is an atrocious OF no matter where you put him. but with fukudome not hitting for as much power as hoped, and lee's power declining, this would be a very good move.
