I'm fine with using leverage, but if this means that Hendry is bailing out so he can get in the over-bidding war for Randy Johnson while there's still a chance there won't be enough puking emoticons to go around.

I total agree with that, Johnson should not be looked at as an option, Marshall can probably put up as good of numbers as johnson does at this point in his career. I think its all about name recognition. I'm a bit down and dissapointed in all of this, i feel hendry dropped the ball in this trade, what if vitters flops and what derosa doesn't resign or his numbers go down then what, Peavy is 27 yrs old and a proven ace but yet we're passing on him cause we want to keep derosa.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!??!?! Hendry should be fired immediately. How do you not get this deal done? It was given to us on a silver platter. What could have possibly ruined this deal??? 2-3 million dollars for Marquis??? He didnt want to deal DeRosa?? Are you kidding?? Deal ANYBODY!!! Its Jake Peavy you moron!! God this is the worst thing Hendry had ever done. I dont care if we dont know the details. If it has anything to do with Derosa, Marquis, vitters, and whomever else was reported and he didnt get it done then he should be fired. Now we'll get a low level prospect for Derosa and be happy. Stupid Hendry! God I was up all night for 2 straight days cuz of this, and now this happens! sdjl;af;adjfakljasd;lkdfj;asklsdfj;klsda

No kidding. You'd think Peavy is the second coming of Cy Young.

That post reminds me of Little Big League: "Give him whatever he wants! Its Rickey Henderson!"

I don't think you can say with absolute certainty that the Cubs passed because of DeRosa.

I share the same feelings, you dont pass up an opportunity to land peavy. The cubs have no prospects of worth other than vitters. Even if the Padres were asking for Pie, Cedeno, Vitter, derosa, Marshall and Marquis, i'd still do that trade. The cubs have one of the worst farm systems, if you could land one of the top pitchers in the MLB for garbage than do it. Vitter and Derosa are the only pieces that have value. You're basiclly trading vitter and derosa for peavy cause anyone else added doesn't have much worth period.

If the Padres trade is dead forever, trade DeRosa to the Twins for the pitching package they are offering. Trade that package to Florida for Hermida. Trade Marquis to anyone who will take him and then sign Furcal. Trade Pie for relief help. Done.

Levine said the only way he sees DeRosa traded was as part of a larger package to get Peavy, not as a stand alone trade.

it is easy to point fingers if it was just between the cubs and the padres

but it wasn't

stop getting so upset, hendry walked away and i trust the man enough to believe that he had a damn good reason for doing so

A couple of thoughts:

1: Why pull out so early in the day?

2: Hendry and the Cubs have made it clear that getting a RF was more of a priority then getting Peavy. Perhaps the deal isn't dead, and that the two sides agree to take a break so that they could focus on other needs. I would buy the deal being dead is it was later in the day, but it is not even noon in Las Vegas.

3: I know Hendry has a reputation for being a "straight shooter", but not as a pansy. He remembers that the Orioles organization kept him hanging---part of that was his fault---maybe he wants to control the situation instead of waiting to hear from the Padres.

4: People seem to think that just because you are a "straight shooter" that means you don't use leverage to get what you want. Negotiations is all about leverage, regardless of reputation. That means just because Hendry is a straight shooter, doesn't mean he won't use leverage if it helps him get the player he wants.

I'm not ruling anything out, and I hate the word dead in the world of negotiations, because nothing is ever dead until said target is no longer available. Let's face facts, as long as Peavy is still with the Padres he is still available, which means no deal is ever dead. I'm holding out hope, but I am not naive, I know this deal is less likely to happen now, then it do on Monday.

Its far more likely that DeRosa had nothing to do with it. My bet is that the Phils wanted DeRosa and Towers was demanding that the Cubs give him Vitters, Pie, Hart/Marshall, Marquis and to eat the vast majority of Marquis' salary. I don't blame him for saying "no" to that.

I'm starting to get worried that Hendry second guesses too much, i feel it might come back and bite us. I mean last year roberts could've made us a better team. This year, what if Dempster flops and harden gets injured, we probably might regret not trading for Peavy. If the deal was vitters, pie, derosa, marquis and marshall, i would be annoyed if hendry didnt pull the trigger.

Roberts would've made us a better team, maybe, at the point that Fukudome started sucking. And even then, it would've been a while before he would've been benched full time in favor of DeRo.

'Tis a virtue

Patience is indeed a virtue, and it's one Hendry is displaying right now. The Padres have painted themselves into a corner. Hendry can wait, and he should. On top of that, Peavy is a luxury, not a necessity.

I think this well put, if it is indeed true that Hendry still has interest but want to be patient then i agree with Bruce. I'm only worried it might go from, he only wants to go to the cubs, to he'll go to the astros, angels or yankees. If peavy stays true to his word and only wants to go to the cubs, then maybe Hendry is being smart. But i still feel that if we enter spring training without peavy then hendry failed on this deal period. Peavy isn't a necessity but certainly would've energize the club for next season and possible help put us over the top for a WS.

We're not the first team to walk away from Towers and his demands in this.

Everyone knows what kind of situation the Pads are in. He has painted himself into a corner.

Just wait and see and stop acting like your life hinges on every tidbit we hear about it (this obviously is only directed at certain people).

Did you read Bruce's post and then paraphrased it? Sounds like you did, just a thought.

Are the Dodgers totally out of the running?

Unless Towers reconsiders.

I'm not really sure what Towers was thinking publicly excluding them and further minimizing his leverage in this situation. Why be so open about it?

Towers took a hatchet to the offseason plans from day 1. This is his mess. Well, I suppose he shares it with Moores, but Moores won't be taking responsibility. There was little reason for them to lay all their cards on the table.

Towers very easily could have went to Peavy and his agent and requested to keep things mum about a trade. Towers then could have come back with "we have about 10 teams interested in Peavy" to gain some leverage. Instead, they were very open about what teams Peavy might have interest in, which eliminated most of the teams from expressing interest. Look at the DeRosa interest right now. There might really only be 2 or 3 teams interested, but the Cubs have it up to 10 teams. That's called leverage and working up a guys value to get as much return as necessary.

Towers blew it from the get go. I'm not sure how interested he is in staying on board a sinking ship, but he can't be winning many points for future jobs right now. Their minor league team is a joke. The major league team is a joke. The trade of David Freese for Jim Edmonds is going to bite them in the behind. And then not meeting budget could be the final straw.

The problem with telling the Cubs there are 10 teams interested is that they might not have jumped in on the negotiations in the first place. Throughout the process the Cubs have seemed like reluctant suitors, first drawn in because of the situation Towers was in and the fact that at most he could go to 4 other teams besides the Cubs. When it seemed like the Braves were the only team bidding, that is when the Cubs picked up their pursuit. All along Hendry has known that the Cubs have a contenting rotation with or without Peavy, so this was never going to be a desperate move by Jim. Maybe if this was December 2006, but not now. Now that the process has been drawn out between the Cubs and Padres, the Cubs are much more serious about their pursuit. But give Jimbo credit, he didn't lose perspective of the fact that, although Peavy would be the best pitcher on the staff, he was more of a luxury to the team than a necessity and he was not willing to mortgage his payroll limits, organization depth and possibly 25 man roster depth to overpay (in his mind) for Peavy.

Without knowing all the details, it's ridiculous to assume that Hendry is the one that failed.

Without, knowing all of the details, I'm not sure you can completely blame Hendry. What did all of the other possible third teams want in their share of the deal? What did the Pads want of the Cubs? Maybe there wasn't a match between any of the third teams and the Pads. Who knows.

And, as far as I remember, Hendry had nothing to do with Roberts not being a Cub last year. That was all Angelos. Hell, Roberts own agent(IIRC) told him he was a Cub. Hendry and MacPhail had the deal done until Angelos killed it.

If it's really over, move on to getting a RF and maybe Furcal and RP.
