By the way, some info on Churchill

Started at the minor league ballparks about six years ago when I was covering the M's system for Scout.com's M's site - insidethepark.com.

I got aggressive in trying to talk to scouts, even though they don't typically like talking. One took a liking to me, and now he's an assistant GM. I meet guys through him every season, and since I double as a staff reporter for the Seattle Post Intelligencer, I can use that cred to get in sometimes, too.

But Prospect Insider is usually enough.

I'm not terribly concerned. When it comes to negotiations, both Hendry and Towers are extremely reasonable men. It's not exactly like we're dealing with Wafflin' Andy MacPhail and his mercurial owner here.

But I fully anticipate mass hysteria tomorrow on this board.

I anticipate the bad kind. The "OMG LETS ALL GO KILL HENDRY OH GOD WHY AM I A CUBS FAN" hysteria. And I'll probably be right in the thick of it.

I'm nothing if not self-aware.

I still say it has something to do with Donald Veal.

The holdup right now is taking on Marquis' salary. That will be agreed upon later tonight or tomorrow. Then the final players will be completely agreed upon after the draft, somehow I think Veal will be included. Just my take, since Veal is the only valuable player from the Cubs in the draft tomorrow.

Mike Valarezo isn't the assistant GM... he's a special assistant to the GM with 4 other guys. Randy Bush is the assistant GM.

I've always kinda liked figgins if for no other reason than his awesomely hilarious first name, but I don't know quite what to make of him

He had two solid years in 04 and 05, a pretty terrible year in 06, a great year in 07, then another pretty poor year last year. Granted, he gets on base at a pretty decent clip and he has some speed, but his stolen base totals have dropped each of the last four years by about 10 per year and he doesn't have crap in the way of power. I suppose we could do worse for a leadoff man but, he's so up and down that it's hard to tell.

Yeah, it seems the slugging won't ever be where you would like it but if he's batting leadoff, it kind of slightly lessens the importance of that assuming he can still get on at a .350+ish rate.

Cubs' budget has room for Peavy trade and left-handed hitter

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-11-cubs-winter-meetings-chicdec11,0,6715962.story

LAS VEGAS - It isn't easy being Jim Hendry, but it's sure fun to try.

And truth be told, any fan with a calculator, a computer and Internet service can try to figure out a way to squeeze Jake Peavy and a quality left-handed-hitting outfielder into Hendry's projected $140 million budget for 2009.

The hardest part is parting with Mark DeRosa, whose solid bat and ability to play several positions made him an invaluable cog on the 2007 and '08 teams. But DeRosa appears to be the key to any Peavy deal, and both Minnesota and Philadelphia are willing to trade top pitching prospects for the veteran infielder so the Cubs can flip them to San Diego along with Jason Marquis and top prospect Josh Vitters.

Now how does Hendry fit both Peavy and a middle-of-the-order hitter into his 2009 budget? With a few subtractions to his '08 payroll.

Yeah I know, I was just hoping he meant that. Because he's an assistant to Hendry, even though his offical title isn't assistant GM. Because I thought his sources were with Mariners minor leagues, and he had a friend in the Cubs front office. Otherwise I dunno who is friend could be unless it was the Mariners assistant GM.

As for Peavy, Padres GM Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that progress is being made in talks with the Cubs, but added: "[Hendry] and I both kind of agree that if we can't come to some sort of an agreement by Thursday, it's probably not going to happen."

That doesn't mean a deal has to be done by Thursday, the end of the winter meetings, but that a framework has to be in place. If the Peavy deal dies, the Cubs will turn their attention to free-agent left-hander Randy Johnson.

# 3 years/$10.5M (2006-08)

   * re-signed by Angels 1/06 (avoided arbitration as Super 2)
   * 06:$2.25M, 07:$3.5M, 08:$4.75M

Looks like he'll be a FA after this season, and since he spent all of last season at 3B (where his SB totals don't help much for his Elias ranking), he'll probably not be worth much in terms of draft pick compensation at the end of the year, if he's worth anything at all. And he's likely to make 8 mil this season, if not more.

I wouldn't play him over Fontenot... I certainly wouldn't pay extra (in terms of prospects or money) to do so, either.

Uber pass.

There are no brothels in Vegas proper (at least not any legal ones). You have to go into the neighboring counties to enjoy that part of the nightlife.

Exactly. My only concern is the drop in his stolen base totals, the last four years he has had: 62, 52, 41, and 34 stolen bases respectively. His caught stealing hasn't gone up, so that just mean's he's not running as much. I just worry that he may lose his speed which, to him, is a big asset. But, if we get him for cheap enough, why not.

Late tonight, the Phils continued to work on a bigger deal as they remained in the hunt to add Chicago Cubs infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa to their World Series championship club.

Shooting down reports that the Cubs would not trade DeRosa, a Phillies official confirmed that the former Penn quarterback was still in play.

The Cubs are not in love with the idea of dealing DeRosa - manager Lou Piniella values his versatility and character - but sources say they realize they may have to if it helps them get the prospects needed to land San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy.

The Phils have not been bystanders in the talks. Sources say they are ready to send two prospects to Chicago to get DeRosa. The Cubs would spin those prospects in a package for Peavy.

Sources say the Phils have submitted a list of prospects, from which the Padres can pick two. The list likely includes pitchers J.A. Happ, Kyle Kendrick and Edgar Garcia. Jaramillo was on the list before being dealt to Pittsburgh. Other prospects are also on the list, and the veteran Coste could be had. It is unlikely that top pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco is available.

Some reports have said that infielder Jason Donald could be in the deal, but sources say he is not. Donald, however, could be available in a different trade. The Phils are not eager to trade Donald and would have to get top quality in return if they did.

Nothing new really.

and non-tender Chad Gaudin

Whats up with Sullivan dislike for Gaudin? Even though Lou talked about Gaudin being in their plans next year, and Hendry reportly liking Gaudin. Sullivan keeps bringing up that they could end up nontendering him. I wonder what Bruce knows about the Cubs plans for Gaudin. I think it would be really really stupid to nontender him.

IMO it looks like there is a deal out there Hendry would accept. But, he is trying to hold off for a better deal. But, when push comes to shove he may have to budge and giveup a little more than he likes.

Hendrys going to wait another day and see what happens. But, I think he's willing to giveup more if he has to for Peavy.
