It's amazing how quickly things change at these meetings.

Earlier today, San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers indicated that trade talks with the Chicago Cubs involving pitcher Jake Peavy had slowed and nothing was imminent. Now I'm hearing a deal could get done by tomorrow, with the Orioles expected to be the third team. Or is it the fourth?

Towers told San Diego reporters that nothing would happen late tonight, but tomorrow could be a different matter. This trade could involve as many as four teams, and pitcher Jason Marquis has emerged as the wild card.

The Cubs need to move Marquis before adding Peavy. Marquis will make $9.875 million next season, and the Cubs will have to absorb quite a bit of it. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Saturday that the club would eat as much as $4 million. Open wide.

Could the Philadelphia Phillies, growing impatient with Jamie Moyer, be the fourth team and a landing spot for Marquis? Could Felix Pie be coming to the Orioles for Garrett Olson? And while we're at it, would the Orioles take Marquis at that price?

Yay! The person who is a mod who openly campaigned to be a mod and then has a big ban-hammer signature picture who claims not to be on a power trip 24/7 with the worlds biggest receding hairline is here to set us straight! THANK YOU O_O!

there is some more insults, how am i doing now tim?

oo im just jerking your chain ;)

Since when have I claimed not to be on a power trip?

Also, now that I've looked through the board, what's up with the receding hairline joke? Are you stalking me or something?

That's kinda creepy, dude.

My money is on a spreadsheet keeping tabs on everybody.

Trading DeRosa now maximizes his value. If we can get it done with other players, I would prefer to do that, but if it allows us to keep more players might be smart. DeRosa is in the last year of a cheap contract and is getting old. He will want a bigger contract next year and is coming into the down side of his career. We need to get more lefties into the lineup and this would force us not to use DeRosa's right-handed bat every game. His versatility and bat would be very missed though.

im offended that you would take a rob penned post and think it was one of mine. he capitlizes words and uses correct grammar and spelling as well as punctuations correctly.

i hardly ever look at who im responding to. i figure if theyre not blocked theyre alright. however when i read someones post i blocked, well then i know

I found this on OH. You guys will probably remember Rock Kubakto from last offseason and the Roberts stuff (he was one of the few that was skeptical of it ever going through from the beginning). Apparently he just said this.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres have looked into getting Mark DeRosa from the Cubs to give to the Phillies in a Jake Peavy deal.

That's an interesting idea. DeRosa would start at second base if Chase Utley misses the start of the year and play left field otherwise. The Cubs can afford to give him up since they have Mike Fontenot to play second base. Still, as good as he was last year, they would almost certainly prefer to hold on to him.

Putting aside all the emotional "he is one of the few guys that gets it" crap, you are absolutely right. How often do you get to sell this high on a 34 year old MI?

If we trade DeRosa in a package for Peavy, I wonder if Rich Aurilia or Ray Durham will be signed to platoon with Fontenot at 2b. Edited by cubsfan26

Maybe, but Bruce did say that there was nothing to the Cubs rumored interest in him.

It could be Cedeno, reverse splits be damned.

Dear God no.

I don't think it would be a horrible idea, Aurilia hit 321/377/903 against LH pitching last year.

Bruce gave me this response when asked about the "having wait for the ownership thing to be settled" talk:

The Cubs' player payroll budget is pretty well set for 2009. They do and they have run things past prospective owners and all seem on board with what the Cubs are doing under the aforementioned budget. Much of Hendry's doings have been predicated on moving someone like Marquis to make a Peavy trade possible. Now, if they go well above their budget, they'd no doubt have to consult with the prospective buyers. But I've not heard any hard and fast rules on getting things "approved" by new owners.

Dear God no.

We would need some sort of insurance chances are Cedeno will be involved in a deal as well so Fontenot alone could be a big problem, and it's probably wishful thinking that we could get Furcal (Theriot/Fontenot platoon) or Hudson on top of a Lefthanded RF. It would probably more realistic and smart for us to sign 1 of Aurilia, Durham or Loretta to platoon/be insurance to Fontenot.

I think it's a big deal. If you're not blocked by me then it generally means that I *want* to read your posts because I *value* what you say and think you, sometimes, have a better opinion than me. Key word: generally. You're not blocked. Generally because you can't block mods, admins, or yourself, unfortunately. I tried all of the above.

Yeah I'm not sure what they will do, but I doubt Hendry would just hand Fontenot the job next year. He would probably bring someone in to play with him if that happen.

Getting DeRosa would make Jason Donald expendable to Philly, and I'd think he'd be heading to SD in place of Ronny Cedeno. Nothing really to back that up, but moving DeRosa just might keep Ronny Cedeno around.
