How many times did we lose games this year because of Piniella's obsession with matchups? We have Micah Hoffpauir, Edmonds or Fontenot due up... but wait.... the other team brings in a lefty pitcher, oh no I forgot lefty batters can't hit lefty pitchers (even though were obsessed about getting a lefty batter for RF). So lets pinch hit Henry Blanco! Cuz he's a righty! Piniella needs to worry about getting "good" players instead of "experienced or lefty" players.

Pinilla never pinch hit with Blanco until the roster were expanded b/c they only had 2 catchers on the 25 man roster.

Actually, Blanco was used as a pinch hitter 14 times before the 01 Sept roster expansion.

Can we please stick to the topic which is Peavy. they should probably close this thread until something significant comes out. I dont think we'll hear anything until after Dec 1st. Or probably til after the cubs have an owner selected so that they can ask for approval to adding more to the payroll.

A deal hasn't taken place because we don't have what the Padres want.

That's not totally true...I don't think we have a great offer on the table, but we could put a deal together that the Padres would want.

no, they've already established that it will take a 3rd or 4th team because the cubs don't have enough of what they want. that came from towers himself on several occasions.

The ESPN Bottom line about an hour had Piniella quoted as the Cubs no longer interested in trading for Peavy, as the rotation is fine.

Which comes from the Sun-Times article that was already posted, so take it as you will.

Lou Piniella is really starting to be more of a buzzkill than Buzz Killington

Do you know the tale of how cornmeal came to be?

Neither did the miller when he left his house that morning.

Oooooohhhhhhh... ugh.

Yeah, so this article doesn't have much info on the Peavy trade, at least nothing we don't knowalready, but I figured it would be a good article to post in this thread since it deals with the Padres and their financial troubles. It's currently the front page article on ESPN's MLB page, and it's basically Kevin Towers talking about how crappy their team is now.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove08/columns/story?columnist=rogers_phil&id=3725229

"It's kind of difficult to have one player eat up a quarter of your payroll," Towers said. "We lost 99 games with Jake, and we're not going to get better by keeping him and his salary."

Although talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have been on-again, off-again, the hope is that Towers can land three or four low-cost, high-ceiling players and begin the team's rebuilding.

That's all there is regarding the Peavy to Cubs situation.

oh well...i think it is good that it has ended...

it was starting to remind me of brian roberts all too much

you happen to miss this one?

Pads GM: 'ChancChecked in on the Jake Peavy Watch today with Kevin Towers.

The San Diego Padres GM isn't giving up hope that he can find a new home for Peavy, one of the game's best righthanded pitchers whose salary is not too big for the Padres' diminishing payroll. So I won't give up asking about it.

Towers disagreed with me that the best chance for a deal might still be the Braves. At the moment, he appears to be favoring the Cubs' chances.

"I think there's a chance of maybe putting together a deal with Chicago,'' Towers said. "At least I know he's willing to go there.'' e' of Peavy-Cubs deal, but not soon

--Although they have reached an agreement with Ryan Dempster, the Chicago Cubs still remain the Padres' best trading partner for RHP Jake Peavy. Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he hadn't heard from the Braves since Atlanta formally withdrew from the Peavy bidding Nov. 11. And although both the Yankees and Angels were said to be interested in Peavy, the 2007 Cy Young winner has told the Padres he prefers to remain in the National League -- and he can veto any trade.

The bolded part is what I am intriged by. I keep going back to that and also what DonnieD told us Jake said. I think he will either remain a Padre or be traded to the Cubs. Hendry will NOT pass up the opportunity to get Peavy. From most accounts, I think Peavy has told Towers he wants to go to the Cubs. Just my opinion.

And yes, I know it's an old article. I was using it for the bolded part.

Based on everything we know, it seems like the RF situation well decide how hard Hendry ends up going after Peavy. I bet his first choice would be to spend the remaining money he has to spend on a RF and then bow out of the Peavy race, with Peavy being a second option if there aren't any RF that are a big enough upgrade to warrant spending money/players on.

I'm kind of hoping we don't get a big upgrade in right, because I think he'd then go hard after Peavy. I'd be fine with Font at second full time and DeRosa in right if it meant a rotation of Peavy/Harden/Zambrano/Dempster. If Harden can give us like 20 starts and Dempster can at least be decent to good, that rotation would be insane... especially if we were able to keep Marshall.

guys...go look at peavy's postseason stats...they are not good...neither are harden's

how many of you are really that ok with derosa being our everyday right fielder?

i think it is much wiser to try and get someone to bat leadoff and fill the RF spot

Why do people care what Piniella says? He's not the GM, Hendry is. Sure he could have some influence in what Hendry does, but do you really think he's going to object to acquiring one of the best pitchers in baseball?

Piniella is probably saying what Hendry wants him to say. I don't think everyone understands the concept of negotiations. We're the only team left standing on Peavy's list of clubs he'll accept a trade to, and Towers has basically been ordered to trade him. The Cubs (mainly Hendry, Piniella needs to support him) need to show that they don't need Peavy as much as SD needs to get rid of him, and that we're willing to walk away, in order to keep the upper hand in the negotiations. As soon as it becomse obvious that we need him more than SD needs to trade him, then it's easier for them to ask for more from us. Piniella doesn't dictate who is on the team. His only role in these offseason talks is to support Hendry's role in negotiations.

Smartest analysis I've heard all thread.

you're right. screw those two pitchers who are among the most dominant in all of baseball. we should get orlando hernandez. he is clutch in the playoffs.

Why would we want to look at hundreds of regular season innings to determine pitcher quality when we can look at 9.2 innings(Peavy) and 11.1 innings( Harden) of post season pitching and tell they both suck?

lol

that's fine, go ahead and bemoan soriano in the playoffs and pretty much the rest of the offense...but...hey...why base it on those 6 games the cubs played the last two seasons?

surely they won't do it again right?

yeah really, what exactly is wrong with that

everybody here can get all up in arms if they want to because i might want some additional offense added and a more potent middle of the order for the playoffs next season

i am just saying that not getting peavy might not that bad of a deal and might actually help us in the long run
