I'm truly bummed about Kerry Wood not coming back. So I thought I'd start a thread in honor of him and his career as a Chicago Cub. Please post your favorite memories of Kid K.

Mine would be, me and my Dad in a rash decision, drove to see Kerry pitch his rookie year up in Minneapolis against the Twins. Added bonus was Sammy was in the midst of hitting his 20 hr in June of that summer. I'll never forget the literal sound of the whizz-thap of him warming up in the Metrodome. I've been to see over 20 Twins games (grew up in NW Iowa) and have NEVER heard anything like that.

Another would be his generosity. Long time Spring Training attendee, Kerry Wood ALWAYS acknowledged the fans and was easily the best "signer" of autographs for kids and all fans really.

Those are my personal ones. The fan stuff - Him leading us past the Braves in 2003 was awesome.

Great player.

I don't know about you guys but I am extremely mad at Hendry right now. Kerry Wood was by far my favorite player on the team and in my mind there are some things that are bigger and more important than how much money a team has. That would be bring Wood back no matter what it cost because to me he was not just a baseball player on the team but represented who the Cubs are and have been. Being the face of the franchise in a very positive way unlike the way Sammy Sosa departed.

That and the fact that you basically replace Kevin Gregg! Are you kidding me!

To me this is almost as bad as when Mark Grace left because during the 90s was also my favorite but the difference is Kerry Wood is still young enough and can dominate. Jim Hendry just weaken the Cubs bullpen because he does not want to spend money. At least he could have flippen offered him something.

This is awful. I just came home from work and saw the news that Kerry's on his way out. I literally have tears in my eyes right now.

I'll curse Hendry about this later for certain, but right now I'm just sad.

I don't want to watch Kerry in another uniform. He was a great Cub, even through the injuries and everything.

I'm so bummed about this. He was the best person to pass through this organization this generation. I still have his autograph on a ball from his rookie season...he stayed longer and signed more autographs than anyone. He could have gotten more money elsewhere several times but took less money to stay with the Cubs and make up for injury-ruined seasons. It won't be the same without him.

At the same time, I get it. He could get way more on the FA market than we could pay him, and he deserves it at this point. If we gave him what he deserves, there wouldn't be enough money to fix the other issues with the team. I just wish one of our overpaid bums would get busted with a prostitute or something so we could void his contract (à la Denny Neagle) and re sign Woody.

he deserves to win a ring somewhere. if its with the cardinals or yankees. i am content with that. i honestly see him going home. i think he will get a chance return to starting there too if he wants

Please, please, please go to the Rangers.

i'd love that!

Me, too. I have a friend who works in their ticket office. I sent him an e-mail today asking him to tell Nolan Ryan & the rest of the Rangers front office that they must sign Woody. ;)

My favorite Kerry Wood memory is from October 15, 2003 – Game 7 of the NLCS against the Marlins. After the Game 6 debacle, every Cubs fan older than eight years old knew the outcome of Game 7 was a foregone conclusion. This was confirmed when Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Yet Woody responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to tie the game and allow Cubs fans everywhere to believe, if only for a couple more innings. I remember watching him circle the bases with tears in my eyes; I’m not sure if they were out of sadness or joy. Entering the game with 211 regular season and 20+ postseason innings, Woody’s tired right arm didn’t have its best stuff, and he eventually left the game in the sixth inning after giving up seven runs. Nonetheless, I never forgot his competitiveness and how he tried to keep the Cubs in the game any way he could.

I was at that game...his homer caused the loudest sound i have ever heard.

My friend with the Rangers said he heard Woody is looking for 4 years $50 million.

I hope Wood gets that, or something close to that.

Sad to see him leave the Cubs, but I wish him all the best.
