It was reported today that Preacher Roe, star Dodgers pitcher of the "Boys of Summer" teams of the 40's and 50's, and Herb Score, one of the most famous "what could have been" stories, have both died. Roe was 92, Score was 75. Roe was a multiple-time all-star in his career, and was absolutely dominant from 49-52. Score could have easily been one of the all-time greats, but was never the same after getting hit in the face with a line drive. He made a name for himself in the broadcast booth with the Indians after he retired.

I saw that Score died while watching the Ball State game on the Deuce, but I didn't realize that Roe also died. At least he didn't die prematurely like several of the Boys of Summer did.

Roe coached my dad in the 60s in the Ozarks. I imagine that had to be a thrill to have an ML star as a coach. He only had good things to say about him.

I happened upon a story about Herb Score in the http://si.com archives. It concerns a trip to the minors during his tenure with the Sox. It's a long article but is so nicely written. It reminds me of the times I spent reading Sports Illustrated as a youngster. I can't put my finger on exactly what made it so, but the journalism was so much better back then. This article gave me a real feel for the kind of guy Score was. Anyway, FWIW. . .
