On September 1st, the Milwaukee Brewers were up 5.5 games in the Wild Card race. On 9/15, before play started, they were tied with Philadelphia.

Mets are on the verge of peeing away the East, for the 2nd straight year [this year's collapse not near as monumental, but still]. And I thought we were cursed.

In a week and a half (or so I've heard said), the Diamondbacks went from up 4.5 to down 4.5

I have a feeling none of this is really different from any other year.

I can't recall another year where three teams in the playoff race from the same league were choking as badly as those three are. One of them will make the playoffs but only because one of the others are giving it away (i.e. Mets vs Brewers for wildcard).

I'm well aware of where the Cubs currently sit, but I feel like it's just tempting fate for us to be making this thread. :|

I know it could tempt fate to get too cocky, but cmon... Cubs are 9.0 up on Milwaukee (who has 11 games left) and 11.5 up on Houston (who has 11 remaining, [12 if needed to play that last "Ike" game]).

I can be one of the most unsure and pessimistic of Cubs fans out there, but even the Cubs can't screw this up. (KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK on wood!!)

this thread began with practically nothing about the Cubs so you are the one that brought them into it

Please don't. I'd prefer that he's healthy for the playoffs.

Pretty sure a thread on a fan forum is not going to alter anything that happens, so , carry on!

Cubs are going to the World Series, every team save the Phillies are horrible in the NL.

the cubs have less than a 1 in 1000 chance of missing the playoffs.

the mets missing the playoffs wouldn't be stunning, nor would arizona. i'm not sure where the mets peaked as far as playoff probabilities, but it was probably not much more than 80%. arizona had a nice lead early, but they've been mediocre since the hot start and never got enough of a cushion to have a real high probability. the brewers, on the other hand, got as high as 96% to make the playoffs. if they miss the playoffs, that will be one of the top 10-15 collapses in history.

it simply says, "eleven"

the countdown has begun my friends, and i see no reason why it shouldn't have started in the first place

The Twins are doing a mighty good job of pissing away their chances
The Twins are my favorite AL team, but I'm pulling for an all-Chicago WS. I can't think of anything that NYers would hate to see more.

If that happens we better win. I would hate those 6 games next year more than I hate them now.

Isn't it like 1 in 10,000?

It is today, yes. In a theoretical world where the Cubs finish a disappointing 4-8, they still win the division, and likely clinch best record.

I will be hoping for an Anaheim/Cubs world series. I already have tickets for a game in Anaheim if that happens.

I am hoping for the same. I should be able to get a ticket to a game, even if that means I don't have rent money for a few months.

When other teams do it, they call it a "collapse."

When the Cubs do it, they call it a "curse."

I sense a double-standard here.

When a team doesn't succeed for 50 years, it becomes some kind of curse. I'm not sure what the Indians curse is.

Oh does it take 50 then? So I guess the Natspos aren't cursed yet.

That's going a little far.

It really just doesn't matter how much worse the rest of these teams are than us. Not in 5 or 7 games. It's not a complete crapshoot, but each series is still fairly close to being a coinflip.

I hate to beat a dead horse with that point, but you hear so many people talking about how much of a failure it would be if they don't pull it off this year that it just needs to be said. Don't set playoff expectations too high and try to enjoy the ride.

Easier said than done, though.
