So the cubs start a new homestand Tuesday and if a couple of things fall our way, we could very realistically clinch the division at home during the next week. Going into tonight's game the cubs magic number currently stands at 9. If the cubs can win tonight and the Brewers lose their second game against philly our magic number will stand at 7 going into the homestand.

We open the homestand against the brewers, so every game we win that series counts as two. Therefore, if we take 2/3 in that series the magic number will drop to 3. Meaning if we sweep st Louis, no matter what Milwaukee does we will have the division clinched by Sunday the 21st.

If we can sweep the brewers (assuming a cubs win and a brewers loss tonight) the magic number would be 1. Setting us up for a clincher Friday afternoon against St. Louis.

Clearly, there's a whole lot of "if"s in this scenario, but it's very possible we could clinch this week. Awesome.

What about tomorrow's game vs the Astros (or did I miss that in your post somewhere)?

If Cubs win/MIL loses tonight, you're right, the number drops to 7. BUT if Cubs win again tomorrow, that number drops to 6.

Setting up these scenarios for the first half of the final homestand:

CUBS win both games vs HOU / MIL is swept by PHI;

- Cubs get swept by Brewers; M# following those 3 will be, 6

- Cubs go 1-2, M# following those 3 will be, 4

- Cubs go 2-1, M# following those 3 will be, 2

- Cubs sweep, NL Central will be clinched

CUBS go 1-1 vs HOU / MIL is swept by PHI;

- Cubs get swept by Brewers, M# will be, 7

- Cubs go 1-2, M# will be, 5

- Cubs go 2-1, M# will be, 3

- Cubs sweep, M# will be, 1

CUBS go 0-2 vs HOU / MIL is swept by PHI;

- Cubs swept by Brewers, M# will be, 8

- Cubs go 1-2, M# will be, 6

- Cubs go 2-1, M# will be, 4

- Cubs sweep, M3 will be, 2

CUBS win both vs HOU / MIL wins last game vs PHI;

- 3-0 MIL = M# : 7

- 2-1 MIL = M# : 5

- 2-1 CUBS = M# : 3

- 3-0 CUBS = M# : 1 [Cubs would have 93 wins then, and MIL could only reach 93 wins if go 9-0 after that series]

CUBS go 1-1 vs HOU / MIL goes 1-3 vs PHI;

- 3-0 MIL = M# : 8

- 2-1 MIL = M# : 6

- 2-1 CUBS = M# : 4

- 3-0 CUBS = M# : 2

CUBS go 0-2 vs HOU / MIL goes 1-3 vs PHI;

- 3-0 MIL = M# : 9

- 2-1 MIL = M# : 7

- 2-1 CUBS = M# : 5

- 3-0 CUBS = M# : 3

So basically, hope for Cubs going 5-0 in next 5 and PHI finishing off the sweep vs MIL tonight. Let's just clinch this thing and get it over with... oh, and if the Mets wanted to go 0-3 or 0-4 over that stretch, well that'd be really swell too.

.

#-o Forgot all about that. So yeah, if all things fall into place, we could realistically clinch on Thursday. Which would rock.

whats the magic number for the playoffs, ie at least the wildcard?

I want to say 8 because the Phillies have won the last two games and it shouldn't have changed - though I could be wrong.

I see the Brewers taking 2/3 from us. They are playing just god awful and they are bound to win some games.

Please Please Please do not play roulette.

Oh, don't overlook the fact that even if the Cubs sweep the Stros and Brewers, the Stros will have to lose 1 game in their next series to be eliminated b/c our magic number on them is 8.

If we win the next two it goes down to 4.

Then the Cubs win 3 and it's down to 1.

So the Stros must lose 1.

Well, The first part of my hypothetical came true. If the cubs win tomorrow then a sweep of the brewers clinches it.

4 game win streak puts it away. Not impossible, but I think its more realistic to expect it during the Cardinals series.
Yeah, I still predict it either friday or Saturday.

Cubs fans deserve the celebration of winning the division... so since it can't be done on Wednesday in any scenario out there... then I don't care when they do it............ so long as its by Sunday.

I'm hoping to clinch the division on Sunday -- got tix to the last regular season game of the year. After that, it's red ivy!

Houston has officially replaced Milwaukee as my team-I-wish-really-bad-things-upon. Those crybabies can't exit the Wild Card race soon enough. Our real celebration will come the day those tools get eliminated and we don't have to make an extra trip to Texas while our Division Series opponent gets to fly to Chicago a day early.

As of now the magic number for the division title and the playoffs are both 7. Since Milwaukee is no longer in sole posession of the wildcard lead there are no longer two different magic numbers.

I'd love for them to clinch at home but it sure would be sweet to take care of business against the Astros today then sweep away the Brewers and clinch on their field... and knock them a few games down in the Wild Card..

Clinching on their field would mean waiting until the last series of the season....and thus a lot of stress between now and then.

No thanks.

While I want them to get it done ASAP, I'll take Saturday, please. It's the only game this week that'll be broadcast nationally, thus, the only one I'll get to see. Any way to get WGN to show more games?

Now you feel my pain. Try living in Texas and having to put up with that crap. They have a hard on for the Cubs for some reason. They love to throw all the "Anyone can have a bad century" crap and Bartman this, choke that sh*t in my face. Meanwhile, their trophy case is completely empty. I really almost hate them more than Cards and Sox fans now.
