Major League Baseball is working out technical issues to start instant replay for boundary calls such as home runs, hoping to institute the system later this year.

"We've got lots of time in August," Bob DuPuy, the sport's chief operating officer, said Wednesday as a two-day owners' meeting began. "There's plenty of August still to go."

Replay was among the topics discussed but doesn't require a vote because it is not a rule change.

"There's not any opposition to it that I've heard," DuPuy said.

I'm hoping that what they're implying with the "boundary calls such as HR" part is that all fair/foul calls will be challenge-able.

If so, this would be a good start.

Selig said the other day that it would only be for HR balls and fair/foul balls down the line.

Said NO to close plays at any base or home.

Said NO to balls/strikes.

Said NO to balls that could have been 'trapped'.

I think that was it.

I don't like the use for this reason. Now on every close call down the line the entire play will take place and then the ump will go use the video screen to determine fair or foul. If an umpire calls a ball close to the chalk foul their will be an argument from the hitting team almost everytime. More often than not umps will make the right call in this situation because they are in closer proximity to the ball, than on a HR call. This often isnt the case on home run balls (unless it is the playoffs or ASG) and controversial home run calls don't happen near as much as a double down the line. This could really slow the game down IMO.

I think, I don't know this, but I think that balls that would be consider reviewable that are down the line happen on rare occasions.

Aside from the Moises game against St Louis in 2003, I can't recall off-hand any time that I really wish replay were instituted for such plays. I'm sure they happen, but the ump gets such calls wrong rarely enough that I don't see it really being an issue whether it's reviewable or not.

As far as the homeruns, I guess it couldn't hurt, though I imagine this is only the beginning of a slowly growing presence in the game.

How annoying is replay going to be at Wrigley with no video replay board for the fans. The fans are just going to be sitting there confused for 10 minutes.

As long as it happens before the 7th/middle of the 7th inning, I'm sure fans can think of something to do to utilize the tie effectively.

I find it a little strange that they're going to implement during a season, especially so late. This seems to be the sort of thing that really should happen over the off-season.

They want it in time for the playoffs as they're envisioning the nightmare scenario of saying instant replay will come next year only to have the umps f up a call in this year's playoffs.

I wonder if this includes fan interference calls :(

so what's the protocol? Umpires never think they're wrong, so I can't imagine them actively seeking out the help of instant replay if one of the managers doesn't push the issue

I hope to God that would fall under the umbrella of "homerun calls"

I'm sure it does. But it wouldn't blow my mind if Grandpa Selig drops the ball there.
