As I've pointed out, that empty spot belongs to Gooz when he (presumably) gets activated in September. You need somebody else besides Chad Fox to make room for 2 rosterings. That's not even considering the possible rostering of Ceda, or the acquisition of another player in August.

On the other side, Jake Fox and Adam Harben don't seem to have much use on the 40 man.

Sam Fuld might be de-rostered too. I could see someone claiming Fuld. Not as much for Fox or Harben.

Not counting E Patt's three-day trip, the Cubs added seven last year. Four pitchers: Ohman, Hart, Gallagher, & Pignatiello Three position players: Cedeno, Soto, & Fuld.

Assuming they bring up a similar number:

Pie

Hoffpauir

Dubois

Guzman

Wuertz

Marshall or Cotts (assuming Lieber is activated and one of them is sent down until 9/1)

& one of: Hart, R. Hill, C. Fox, K. Hill, J. Fox, Fuld

Ascanio, Hart, Weurtz, and Lieber (assuming he's not back before then)

Pie, Hoffpauir, Dubois/Fox

They need to add one more guy, a 3rd catcher. Preferably they'd add another backup SS type, but we don't really have many options, and none of them are on the 40 man.

I can see McGehee added as the 3rd catcher/1b/3b. It's almost got to be him or Koyie Hill, so it depends on if they want versatility or a solid defensive catcher (which the other 2 are already).

Its time to remove Chad Fox, Adam Harben, and Sam Fuld from the 40 man. Jake Fox might be worth a call up, but Gooz, DuBois, and Koyie Hill could all prove helpful as September additions. As for Rich Hill, as far as Im concerned, shut him down until next year. Hes useless as far as 2008 gos.

Remember when Hendry deemed Fuld "untouchable"? I still say it was part of his master plan to try and get other teams interested in an otherwise useless prospect.

How long do the AAA playoffs last? With Iowa in, and looking to go deep, a lot of the guys wed been expecting to be called up, we'll have to wait on. therefore, the first set of call ups will probably be limited to the likes of Jake Fox, Sam "The Untouchable" Fuld, and maybe even Tyler Colvin will get a shot.

No, it will be the other way around. The big league team takes priority so guys who are needed like Hoffpauir, Guzman and Pie will be up immediately. Guys like Fox, Deeds, Fuld, W. Castillo, Ceda, etc. might get moved up to AAA to take their place.

It must suck to be a fan of a AAA team.

While it's pretty obvious that Gooz will get that open 40 man roster spot, is there any chance that Jeremy Papelbon, who is 25 and never been past A will get a shot? There are guys who can be pulled from the 40 man, such Sam Fuld, Adam Harben, and CHAD FOX, and he has been pretty hot lately.

edit: never mind, hes on the 7 day DL.

No, he's never pitched above high-A, he's not considered much of a prospect since he's a soft tosser and as you said, he's hurt. Heck, there's a good chance he'll miss the FSL playoffs due to his blisters.

And as has been repeated over and over, Chad Fox is now on the 40-day DL for strategic reasons if someone like Angel Guzman needs to be added to the playoff roster.

If you want to see a minor league reliever who might be added to the 40-man roster, I'd say Jose Ceda or Casey Lambert.

Just to point out, to avoid confusion Gooz doesn't need Fox's spot, he's on the DL himself. There is one DL spot that's gonna be needed for the 14th position player for sure.

McGehee was not quite the right handed hitter off the bench I've been pining for. It's not even like he's had a great year and they're rewarding him for it. Dubois or Kroeger were the clear contender for that honor. Failing that, Matt Craig again did nothing but hit this year.

I think McGehee is seriously getting the call so he can be a 4th catcher, and that's just lunacy.

I too was hoping the Kroeger would get the call. He'd be a nice LHB who could at least play the corner OF. I guess Craig and Dubois having a skid the last couple weeks were all the Cubs needed not to add either to the roster.

And I'd have to imagine it's Fox to the 60 man and Harben outrighted. Though I guess they could add Hill to put him to the 60 man.

To once again hammer on the Matt Craig point, he KILLS lefties. OPS vs them in his minor league career of ~960. Last 2 seasons over 1000.

Wow, no Pie? The Cubs have totally soured on him. He's so traded this offseason.

McGehee came out of nowhere. I know Lou soured on Jake Fox quite a bit last year but at AA, the guy is actually taking walks and hitting home runs at a ridiculous rate. And he's on the 40-man.
