Funny how you can get a cheesesteak pretty much anywhere in the Mid Atlantic and just about all of them would be better than the one's you'd get in Philly. Surprisingly, the you can buy a cheesesteak from a guy that isn't as good as Howry. Well' most of the time anyway.

How about Soriano to Boston for Manny Ramirez? Granted it would never happen but it would sure benefit both teams. The Cubs could slide Theriot and Fukudome into the 1-2 spots as well as getting rid of Soriano's awful contract. For Boston, Soriano's power in the leadoff spot is that much more useful without the pitcher batting 9th. Soriano is not as good as Ramirez but the Red Sox seem to be tired of his act.

Why would Epstein & Co want to go from overpaying Ramirez for two more months to overpaying Soriano for six years? There's also the whole issue that Soriano is an inferior hitter to Ramirez.

It's not about the money. It's about the whole "Manny being Manny" striking out on purpose, hitting the travelling secretary, whining about how they don't respect him and so on.

Striking out on purpose? When did this happen?

So obviously this isn't good news, but is it a reason for concern?

Not sure. Looking at the team, who could you replace?

We could add a starter, but Marquis has pitched at least adequately enough not to make that a major need.

Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly, and Marquis is as good as any rotation.

Lee and Ramirez are slumping, but you aren't going to trade for a 1st or 3rd baseman.

DeRosa and Fontenot are handling second fine.

You aren't replacing Soto or Soriano.

You could add an outfielder, but there likely isn't a CF that would out produce a Johnson/Edmonds platoon.

The only thing I could see doing in the OF is adding a LF, sliding Soriano to right, and having Fukudome join the Johnson/Edmonds rotation in CF.

A bullpen arm would be nice, but teams typically overpay for the better ones and the others you never know what you're going to get.

Wow..that would be rash. A 12 million dollar third of a platoon. And one that cuts into the playing time of a guy slugging over .700 since he joined the Cubs to boot.

I was considring looking to see if we could add a right handed stick to help against lefties, considering that Reed Johnson was our 5 hitter against Scott Olsen the other night, but who would be sent out? There really isn't a candidate. I would call Ned Coletti, talk up Bobby Howry's "presence", "experience", "character" and the fact that he's a "gamer" and see if I could get one or a couple of the 50 prospects the Dodgers will find a way to block as long as he's there.

I don't want to take anything off the table, but at the same time I don't think it's a good idea to empty out what little we have left in our system because our offense has slumped a little lately and we're working through a few issues in the bullpen.

If Hendry and the Cubs are serious about going for it , I don't buy there not going to be active this week and the Cubs are one of the few teams where taking on Ramirez's salary for a rental might not be a problem.

Places where they used cheese whiz. I guess there must be some hidden places that only locals know about. Really not worth going back to Philly to find out.

Never been to Philly, but those cheesesteaks they always show on MNF when they travel to Philly sure look good. No cheese whiz there.

Anyway, OT.

agree 100%. This Cub team should be good enough to win, maybe win big. I would stand pat unless something fell into our laps.

I'm ok not making another trade. We already traded for an ace. Sure, our bullpen and CF might need upgrading but is it to the point where you give up prospects for it and if you do would it be even worth it? I'd say no. Our bullpen is struggling but we have talent out there and I believe we can get by. Howry is cooked though.

it bears repeating that CF has been one of the best (if not the best) offensive positions on the team since Edmonds was acquired

Weird huh? I almost feel dirty acknowledging that Edmonds has done a good job for us so far, taking everything into account.

Like only cheese whiz? Are you sure you were in Philly? I've seen the option for whiz but I've never had something that nasty.

pat's serves a whole lot of their steaks with cheez whiz, which is gross. pat's and geno's are pretty average, frankly.

the best steaks that i've had:

-john's roast pork. it's a little shack in an industrial area in south philly, looks like a complete dump. but their provolone is excellent, their meat isn't chopped up into little bits, and the rolls are hearty. their pork sandwiches are also amazing.

-rick's steaks (in reading terminal market, center city). it's a relative of pat's, but they have pepper jack cheese as an option, which makes it outstanding.

-d'alessandro's, which is up in the roxborough section of the city. their rolls are really fresh and the cheesesteak is bigger than you'll get at pat's or geno's.
