Kevin Durant just had his number retired after only one year at the school. I believe most schools hold that you need to graduate before you have your number retired. So, should players have to graduate from said school to have their number retired?

I really don't like jerseys retired in any sport unless the player was a Babe Ruth/Hank Aaron/Jordan/Gretzgy Pro wise and Jim Brown type college player wise.

I kind of agree, but think it can be opened up to anyone who made a significant impact (performance-wise) on a team for an extended period of time.

Peyton Manning at Tennessee, Donovan McNabb at Syracuse, Darren McFadden at Arkansas, Herschel Walker at Georgia and Reggie Bush at USC are recent examples of what I'm talking about. Reserve them not just for the greatest players to ever play the game, but also the greatest players to ever play for their respective team/school.

And one year isn't enough time to make that type of impact, in my opinion. I went with at least three years.

One year is foolish imo and I hope Syracuse doesn't do this foolishness with Melo but our AD is just flash and probably would do it to get a big record crowd in the Dome.

I don't have a problem with your list other than Bush if he's found to be guilty of taking cash.

The Yankees are the biggest goof when it comes to this. Mattingly, come on.

I don't have a problem with it, but personally I like the way the Cowboys have done it. The player is inducted in the ring of honor, but the number isn't retired.

I think he's talking about football jerseys, not prison numbers.

It's obviously different for basketball than football since the football players have to stick it out for 3 years.

Along with winning a national championship, UCLA requires at least 1 of 3 of the following to retire a basketball player's jersey: minimum of 3 first team All-American, national player of the year or induction in the Basketball HOF. Only 7 Bruins have had had their number retired in men's basketball.

I know that other strong college basketball programs have more stringent rules too that wouldn't have let Durant retire his number.

Good point on Bush, I wasn't thinking of his pending issues. The biggest guideline for me is that the player must be special for the organization - if he is, then I have no problem with their number being retired.

I don't see the big deal if Carmello has his number retired since he played such a big role in a championship. Durant? Yes.

I don't really care about how many seasons, but you should make some sort of lasting impact. Obviously that's easier to do when playing more than 1 season. Retiring Durant's # is kinda crazy.

I'll never forget when they retired Dick Butkus' number at Illinois. Some genius scheduled Nebraska that day and they were up like 42-0 at half time. Butkus' acceptance speech in it's entirety:

"Thank you for this great honor. Enjoy the 2nd half  "

It's hard to imagine anyone wearing # 23 for the Cubs but the same thing would be accomplished by just not issuing that number until only the old timers remember that guy. I'd be ok with Felix Pie wearing #14 since people know Ernie Banks but people that never saw him play don't really care what his number was.
