http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/07/19/did-brewers-trade-ford-for-street.aspx

San Francisco - I just got a call from a contact in Brevard County who told me that word was circulating there that outfielder Darren Ford had been involved in a trade for Oakland closer Huston Street.

Then, Ford was pulled from Brevard's lineup before its game against Clearwater. Players often are pulled from the lineup when they've been put into a trade. The Brewers did the same thing with Matt LaPorta in Huntsville before trading him to Cleveland in the CC Sabathia deal.

The fact that Ford was pulled from the lineup makes me believe something could be up. He has no injury that I know of.

GM Doug Melvin is here with the club, so I'll go ask him if it's true and get back to you.

Sorry about your luck....

Something is up, probably not Street

San Francisco - The Brewers definitely have some kind of trade in the works but I was just told by a club source that it is not for Oakland closer Huston Street (who is pitching badly by the way).

I'm still trying to get hold of GM Doug Melvin, who was nowhere to be found after the game. But Brevard County outfielder Darren Ford, a speedster, was pulled from the team's lineup before the game today and word was circulating there that he had been traded.

I'll see what I can find out but this might be something that's not announced until tomorrow. Stay tuned.

It could be a minor deal

San Francisco - Whatever deal the Brewers are working on, I'm told there is no plan to announce it before tomorrow. And I'm now getting word that it might be with the Giants.

If Class A Brevard County centerfielder Darren Ford is the only player involved, it would be a minor deal for either a bench player (Ray Durham?) or a relief pitcher (Jack Taschner?).

Ford, 22, is one of the fastest players in the minors. He is batting only .230 at Brevard but has swiped 48 bases in 59 attempts. He stole 67 bases last season while splitting time at Class A West Virginia and Brevard.

Hard to say right now if the deal includes more than Ford. He was scratched from the Brevard lineup today with word circulating around that club that he had been traded.

I'll follow up later today if I hear anything but this might not break until tomorrow. And it might turn out to be a minor deal. Oakland closer Huston Street blew another save today in New York and I heard the Brewers' scouting reports on him are not good.

I like how he tried to soften the impact of his screw up and crappy journalism by saying the Street isn't pitching well. All of Street's peripherals look good.

Hey, Ray Durham is almost as good as Huston Street, right?

Maybe the Cubs will go out and trade for Jeff Kent as a response, since both teams seem to be in a groove for trading for California ballplayers.

Here's Beane's response to the rumor/speculation.

One of the Brewers' top scouts was on hand, reportedly to take a look at Oakland's closer as the trade deadline approaches, and after the game, there was a report in Milwaukee that "word was circulating" that the Brewers had traded outfielder Darren Ford for Street.

"Not true, totally false," A's general manager Billy Beane said by phone. "There is nothing going on, zero. That is 100 percent inaccurate."

There remains a possibility, however, that Oakland will move Street in the next two weeks as the team continues its quest to add top young prospects, but the A's are looking for good return on any deal, and Street's value might have taken a dip during a recent rough patch. Since June 20, Street has an ERA of 6.94 and opponents are batting .348 against him.

My editor said he heard something today, I believe on the radio, about a Brewers-Giants trade involving Cain going to the Brewers for Hardy and Gamel. I didn't ask where he heard it or from whom because I didn't have the time but I figure I'll throw it in here.

Good god, I hope not.

The Brewers would be stupid if they didn't inquire about another arm or two. They have the prospects to deal, a young nucleus and will likely lose Sheets and Sabathia after this year anyway. If they could get Cain, they would still have a pretty strong system. They could also have a pretty solid Cain, Gallardo, Parra start to their rotation.

ok...i guess the deadline worries have gone from...gee are the cubs going to get anything to...oh crap...who are the brewers going to land next

If the Brewers were going to trade Gamel, I'd prefer if it was for a guy they'd have under control for a few years. Cain fits that bill, but I don't think even Brian Sabean is stupid enough to trade away his young pitchers. The Durham/Taschner deal seems much more likely to me. It wouldn't be a bad move, but it's not going to have a ton of impact, either. Taschner's a pretty average lefty relief arm, and Durham is actually worse defensively than Rickie Weeks these days. Durham does bring a nice .380 OBP that the Brewers desperately need, though, so there's the possibility of him platooning with Weeks down the stretch, with Durham facing righties. Even if he doesn't go into a platoon with Weeks, he'd be a nice bat off the bench.

they're probably going to make the playoffs anyways, and Cain gives them a full blown powerhouse rotation. i don't know that any team can compete with Sheets, CC, Cain and Parra in a short series. Hardy doesn't offer much vs. righties and they brutalize lefties regardless; Escobar could certainly replace his defense adequately.

I'd take Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Hill.

not to mention matching jewelry on their ring fingers

Adding Cain and losing Hardy is a lateral move at best for this year.

Who would the Brewers have playing SS if Hardy were dealt?

Most likely Alcides Escobar, who'd be a defensive upgrade over Hardy, but a huge offensive downgrade. His presence in the lineup would mean a huge black hole from spots 7-9 (Escobar, Kendall, Pitcher).

Knowing Ned, though, they would bring up Escobar and make him sit on the bench while Counsell plays every day, since Counsell is such a gritty battling gamer. ](*,)

Can someone confirm this? Hardy is a pretty stellar defensive SS.

I would be all over that deal if I was the Giants. They don't really have many good hitting prospects coming up through the minors and by making that deal they would get a good, young shortstop (Hardy has the third highest OPS by shortstops in the majors this year) as well as a highly touted hitting prospect for a guy who only plays once every five days and who can be very good but is very inconsistent.
