I'm guessing we'll be hearing tomorrow that Guillermo Mota has been designated for assignment.

Yes, the move is long overdue, but enough is enough. After giving up four runs tonight in one inning, he has allowed eight runs in three innings in four July appearances. And that's after a 6.48 ERA in nine July outings.

When manager Ned Yost was asked about Mota's status after the game, he said, "I don't make decisions like that after a game."

Those are the same words Yost has used in the past before Derrick Turnbow was sent out, Dave Bush was sent to the minors and Eric Gagne was removed as closer. It's basically Yost's way of saying "I'm not going to address it tonight but I will in the morning."

You can't have the general manager say on Monday "We're going for it" and have the manager continue to allow Mota to blow up games. His entrance has become tantamount to a forfeit. Now we know why the Mets couldn't wait to jettison him last winter, to the point of taking Johnny Estrada in trade and then releasing Estrada.

Here's my suggestion for a replacement: Nashville closer Luis Pena is on fire. He saved his 15th game in 17 chances today, and has allowed six runs over his last 31 games, covering 30 1/3 innings (1.78 ERA).

And Pena is on the 40-man roster, so he's easy to call up. Certainly, he's got to be better than Mota, who was throwing pitches right down the middle of the plate tonight, time after time. If the hitters had missed those pitches, they would have gone into the clubhouse and started breaking things.

Enough is enough.

Unless it's a typo he's averaging well over a strikeout per inning but over two walks per inning.

I don't think it's a typo -- baseball-reference has similar numbers (I'm assuming there's a game or 2 missing there)

it's not a typo, he's been terrible since coming to nashville.

Is he hurt, or has he been hanging around Rich Hill too much?

LOL @ Derrick Turnbow.

It's amazing. Not too long ago he was the guy they put the special graphics up with fire and all the bells & whistles when he would come in to close a game for the Brewers. Now AAA hitting is pounding the living daylights out of him.

Gotta wonder what happened. Did he just have a lucky year or two?

In a decision that's sure to cause much anguish across Brewer Nation, manager Ned Yost just told us that there are no plans to get rid of reliever Guillermo Mota, who has been a human batting practice machine of late.

Yost said they consider Mota salvageable because they know what he's doing wrong -- collapsing his back side -- which causes his pitches to flatten out. This is a problem they corrected earlier in the year but Yost said Mota has reverted back to it and spent two hours with pitching coach Mike Maddux and fellow reliever/supporter Eric Gagne after the game last night looking at video.

That was after Mota was crushed for four runs -- including two homers -- in the eighth inning, turning a 4-3 deficit into an 8-3 defeat. Mota has been awful for many weeks, posting a 6.82 ERA in June and allowing eight runs in three innings in four July outings.

Mota is 2-5 with a 5.82 ERA. Despite evidence to the contrary, Yost insisted that Mota has not been responsible for losing games.

"It's a team game. We win and lose as a team," said Yost.

Yost said he wouldn't use Mota in game-deciding situations until his delivery problem was fixed. That will be easier said than done, however, because David Riske and Eric Gagne recently came off the DL and aren't ready for big workloads.

Yost said he didn't think Mota's confidence was shattered and that he'd be able to handle the inevitable booing at home that comes with his entrance into games.

Suffice it to save I have huge doubts about all of that. If the Brewers allow Mota to continue to lose games, the quote from general manager Doug Melvin that "we're going for it" after the CC Sabathia signing will start to ring hollow.

My only guess is that the Brewers don't think they have a better alternative. And I'd say just about anybody is a better alternative right now.

If the Brewers end up losing the division by two games again this year, they'll regret how many games they allowed Mota to spit up.

But, of course, that's just my opinion.

Must be 'roids (after all, that seems to some people to be the only explanation for somebody who suddenly starts sucking).

Part of me wants to see the Cubs pick up Mota just to see if he can figure it out in a new environment and spite the Brewers something fierce. On the other hand, there is no getting around the fact that he really, really sucks.
