With numerous people saying we might not have what Oakland wants, would we match up better with Seattle? Bedard quietly has gone on a nice little run to get his numbers down to :

3.67 ERA / 1.32 WHIP and on pace to give up only around 16 HR's.

However, one problem is shoulder pain during his last start that will cause him to miss his next.

If they are looking to get back a chunk of the talent they gave up to get him, would something like Pie/Gallagher/Ceda make sense for both clubs?

here we are talking about the injury issues with burnett and harden, yet they haven't had any problems this year...

meanwhile, Mr. Bedard has been plagued by problems all season long...

that doesn't concern you at all?

It does but how many 1-2 starters are available....

Harden, maybe Hudson, Bedard, and Burnett if you consider him one.

Bedard's still been able to make 2 more starts than Harden has so far this year.

I'm not particularly interested in Bedard between the injury history (this would hardly be the first time he's broken down) and all the whispers coming out of Seattle this year. He seems to be at the center of all the dysfunction there. There have been way too many sources who says that he does whatever he wants and comes out of the game whenever he wants. Plus, he's been absolutely awful at being efficient with his pitch count lately.

There's another thing to consider with Bedard. Fired Mariners skipper John McLaren is a cronie of Lou Piniella. In fact, McLaren was tabbed as bench coach here when Piniella took the job, but decided to go to Seattle instead. I'm pretty sure that before making any deals for Bedard, Piniella is going to talk to McLaren and pass that along to Hendry. I just don't see Bedard coming here with all that taken into consideration.

Can anyone clarify why exactly it is that Bedard has this reputation as an ass?

He's anywhere from aloof to a jerk around fans and the media, and does the bare minimum to appease both.

He has a reputation for being soft with injuries.

He also has a reputation for having his own agenda as far as when and how long he pitches, which, combined with his pitch count issues, leads to many frustratingly early exits.

His former GM had some hilarious comments about his unwillingness to pitch deep into games. That's all I really know.

Very interesting take Vance.

Even with Bedard's character concerns, I'd have interest. But not if the Mariners really are trying to recoup the entire price they paid for him.

The Mariners gave up five pretty good prospects. I'd offer something along the lines of Pie (or Colvin), Hill, and Atkins; and then see where the deal went.

Bedard with the press about his surliness and mood swings and some injury concerns isn't perceived the same as he was in the offseason.

I'd be willing to buy Low if Bedard came with Rhodes and we had enough Ammo to go get Bradley.

I've seen you post about Bradley a lot. I don't really want to derail the thread, but where would he play?

Right now, it's going to take most of our chips to get a front-line starter. Adding to the offense, while nice, isn't the priority. Bradley can't play CF any more, at least by the accounts I get out of Texas. In fact, he's had to rest the knees several times this year, and that's just with him Dhing. I like Bradley, but if we got him, we'd have to shift Fukudome to CF and play him in RF.

Bradley in right, Fukodome Center, Soranio LF, Edmonds and Johnson to keep everyone rested.

You wouldn't be able to keep both Edmonds and Johnson. You'd have to either trade or release one of them.

Why? Soriano, Fukudome, and Bradley would all need some time off,and Johnson could play the corners while Edmonds backs up in center.

You only have 5 bench spots. 1 of those go to the backup catcher. 2 more go to middle infielders. So that only leaves 2 spots left for any corner infielders/outfielders.

Ward takes one of those spots, so the other spot can only go to 1 of Edmonds/Johnson.

I guess so. Though you could just go with 1 middle infielder since DeRosa would be at 2B all the time and wouldn't be needed in the OF.

Either way, as much as I like Bradley, I don't think he's a good fit here, and I'm skeptical about putting Edmonds on the bench as long as hes hitting the crap out of the ball.

With Edmonds being a bench player, you could dump Fontenot instead of Johnson if that's what you wanted.

I'll take Bedard if he comes cheaply, and he likely will come cheaper than what they gave up for him, but considering what they did give up for him I doubt they want to let him go for peanuts

As has been pointed out, there's not enough roster spots for that to happen.

Also, the Rangers are going to want pitching for Bradely. They will likely ask for Gallagher. When the Cubs say no, they will insist on Marshall and might settle for Veal. Any other pitcher we would offer would be too far away from major league ready for them to deal.

So, if we go for Bradley, he's going to cost either one of the chips needed to get a Harden, Hudson, Bedard, etc. OR He's going to take away from the little pitching depth that we have.

There aren't enough roster spots for 5 OF?

Who are you dropping from the squad to make room? I know you were one of the big proponents of 2 backup middle infielders.

I'm not the one making the deal, nor am I aware of who has been talked about as trade bait. I was just responding to the assertion that there aren't enough roster spots for 5 OF. I don't know what you mean about being a big proponent for 2 backup middle infielders, but I have mentioned in the past that I'd doubt the Cubs would go without a backup SS. I am a big proponent of doing away with the 12-man pitching staff.
