good for Lou. Patterson has looked terrible in LF the last couple of games. Hopefully he hasn't ruined his trade value.

i doubt that he has; most competent clubs do not evaluate potential acquisitions on the basis of a a couple of poor performances.

I must admit it is starting to concern me that once one of the "rooks" has a bad game, he's banished to the bench, or triple A to lose his confidence.

If that were true, Soto would have been bounced up & down to Des Moines a few times this year.

Its not just a couple of performances. Hopefully none of the clubs have actually scouted him playing 2b either. In Iowa his 2b was actually worse than his LF if that is possible.

Oh, its true. There is a reason the Cubs are trying to find a different position for him, and its not because DeRosa is blocking him.

It's because they're obsessed with versatility.

Eric Patterson is clearly not ready for everyday major league action, if you can't see that from his at bats or his play in the field I don't know what to tell you.

His fielding percentage in LF is like .810 and it was never that low at 2nd. So yeah. Hyperbole.

No b/c Soto played several weeks at an incredible level to give him a cushion.

Murton, Pie, EPatt, Cedeno, Soto - one of these kids doesn't belong.

Lou might run out of OFers.

I remember the good old days when we used to have an OF with red hair named Murton. If Patterson is replacing him in Lou's doghouse, maybe Murton can replace Patterson in LF. Crazy idea.

Let's clear this up right now - Lou does not have anything against young players. Fontenot, Theriot and Soto are position players who see significant time. Gallagher is in the rotation. Marmol is trusted with the most crucial moments in most of our wins.

Lou is not Dusty. Period. Get over it.

^^ Correct

I don't blame him one bit for putting EPatt in his dog house. Yesterday's outfield might have been the worst all year: Patterson, Edmonds with 1 leg, and Ward. EPatt needs to go.

Let me be clear - I did not see yesterday's game so I can't testify as to whether Patterson was as brutal in LF as has been reported, and I don't feel like Patterson should be sent down over one bad game.

That said, I trust Lou's evaluation of players. He has a good track record in that respect, IMO, and he has not been afraid to sit fringe vets in favor of youngsters since he got to the Cubs. Just b/c a player is young doesn't mean he should be playing everyday in The Bigs and that we should all jump to be hypercritical of management when they decide not to play him.

Oh he was brutal, every White Sox runner was sent on his arm and he couldn't throw anyone out. He also had a ball roll right through him leading to AJP getting to 3rd on a single. It was brutal. Call up Dubois.

Kidding about that last part ;)

This hardly sounds like he is in "the doghouse":

Manager Lou Piniella didn't mince words when asked afterward if Patterson would be back in the starting lineup Saturday.

"I don't think so, no," he replied. "We'll put somebody else out here in left field. … We'll make some changes and go from there."

Some of you guys got suckered by the melodrama created by craptastic sports writing.

lou is not dusty, but lou is also not someone who will allow someone who is young a chance to make mistakes at the big league level. i don't know that i blame him with a team that's built to win right now, but you can't say that felix pie got as much chance with the cubs as a lot of young players on other teams.

They made EPatt an OF, essentially at the ML level, which is stupid. Especially when you have a 1-legged CF on the other side of him. I don't know where Lou gets the idea that players can learn to play the OF at the ML level when they've been IF their whole careers.

My issue is - if you throw an IF into LF and they suck right away, the person you should be mad at is yourself b/c that's a stupid idea. If EPatt is brutal at 2B like everyone claims (I've never seen him play there nor seen his stats from their), teach him to play the OF in the minors over a significant period of time. If you bring him up and shove him in LF b/c you think you need speed at the top of the order and he's horrid on defense and the entire Sox team takes extra bases on him - it's your own fault.

Agreed, but his penchant to act like people in the game threads here is displeasing to say the least.

I mentioned this is in another thread about the importance of outcome. Playing players out of position because they are "versatile" may seem like a good idea on the surface but it will sometimes result in poor play. Eric Patterson is NOT an outfielder, he's a 2nd baseman. His problems are a result of playing a position his is not suited for. People shouldn't get made at Eric, they should get mad at Lou. I think Lou now knows that Patterson isn't a LFer, at least not yet. He still has time to learn.

A fair point, but this team is built to win now. We aren't the D-Rays where we ripped the thing down and are building it up again, thus allowing young guys to work through rookie mistakes. It may not be how some of us prefer to go, but its the reality.

That said, my thesis is simple: Lou does not discriminate against young players. The fact that they sent Pie down (exception, not the rule) does not change this.
