Have they announced who is being sent down yet?

I can't find anything on Cubs.com. It's gonna be either Murton or Hoffpauir, with the other going down for Ward when he comes back this weekend. My guess is that it comes down to how Johnson is feeling. If he's still gimpy, then Murton will stay for a RH bench bat in the OF. If Johnson is okay, then Hoffpauir will remain.

According to the Trib, the most likely candidate is Johnson:

The Cubs will make a roster move Tuesday to clear space for left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall.

Outfielder Reed Johnson is a likely candidate to go on the disabled list with back problems.

Johnson has not played since Tuesday at Tampa Bay, when he hurt his back running to first on the ninth-inning bunt attempt that ended the game. The Cubs could backdate Johnson on the DL because he hasn't played since, making him available to return July 3 in San Francisco.

Good Johnson seems like the obvious choice especially since he can go back six days on the DL, so he'd only have to sit out nine more. I'd love to see Murton stay up for a little while longer, and Fukudome has played Center Field a little over the last week, and seems somewhat comfortable there if we need him. Also, has Patterson played any CF in the minors? And I know we were tinkering with Cedeno in CF at one time, does he ever take fly balls there anymore?

So why is it that Murton can be brought up and down infinitely, yet Cedeno is apparently out of options? Murton must have gone up and down as many times, if not more than Ronny.

option years, not times.

Murton has been optioned 1 this year already. Doesnt that mean if they want to send him down, theyd have to DFA him, and hope he doesnt make it through waivers, which he wouldnt? And Ronny hasnt been Optioned yet this year, hint hint.

once you have been optioned once in a year, he can be optioned as many times possible in that year without losing an option

Is Cedeno out of options? Did he have to clear waivers when he started the season in AAA (or am I dreaming and he didn't start out in AAA)?

I'm pretty sure this is correct. Cedeno is kind of like a Rule 5 draft pick this year, he had to make the team out of spring training and stay on the team the entire year or we would have had to DFA him or trade him. I'm not sure, but if I had to guess Murton probably will be the same way next year. Does Fontenot have any options left?

I'm fairly certain he is out of options and has not spent any time in AAA this year.

Fontenot has to have a lot more than Murt and Cedeno. He was up for 7 games in '05, but was never sent back down since being brought up last season, and was never brought up by the O's.

Fontenot went back down to Iowa 3 days after he came up the first time he was up last year. He has 1 option left.

Cubs minor leaguers of note:

Zero options: Soto, Cedeno

1 option: Fontenot, Marmol, Wuertz

1 option already being used this year: Ascanio, Cotts, Hill, Pie

I see a website that Murton had 2 options to start the year (obviously he would be using 1 during this year). I don't think that's correct though. This should be his last option year unless there is something I'm not aware of.

Patterson still has another option for next year if the Cubs need it, as do Marshall and Gallagher.

Has it officially been announced? Sully wrote about it a few days ago, and the Cubs shot that report down. Now he reported that Johnson is "likely to the DL" last night, but who knows how much truth that holds since we're talking about a crap beat writer who I'm sure the Cubs enjoying messing with. Remember, he also reported the Coco Crisp rumor last week which was complete bunk. Take everything you read from Sullivan with a grain of salt.

If Johnson is on the DL people can now shut up about how lucky the Cubs are. Now their star OF has been on the DL twice, their ace is on their DL, their key bench player has missed over a month including almost all of interleague play in AL parks, and now their LH platoon CF is on the DL.

they confirmed it on the score. they also said daryl sard is at Wrigley taking BP and that they would activate him before the end of this series, perhaps even tonight, so that he can get some real game experience before the sox series - AL park - need for a dh this weekend.

The official word: Marshall up, Ward activated, Johnson to the DL, Hoffpauir to Iowa.

Makes the most sense - Hoff and Ward are pretty redundant.

If Patterson keeps showing he can hit he is going to put some pressure on the Cubs to send down Fontenot instead of him when Johnson and/or Soriano returns. Patterson and Fontenot also bring pretty much bring the same skill sets except Patterson can play OF which makes him a bit more valuable if they are equal offensively.

Cedeno is out of options, Murton has one option left after this year regardless of how many times he's sent down this season, Fontenot has one option left and would use it if sent down this year.

Fontenot and now Murton would need optional assignment waivers though before being optioned. That's the revocable kind that's often treated as a formality, but you never know.

Yeah, who needs a pair of lefty power bats when you can have Ronny Cedeno.

Didn't we just come to the conclusion that Cedeno was out of options, or did someone take that part of the thread off?

Yes, he's out of options. Also, we'd have 2 guys with no defensive position on the team, no backup SS, and only Johnson/Murton and Blanco from the right side on the bench. There's no need for Hoffpauir with Ward on the team, especially since Fontenot is a capable second LH pinch hitter
