I don't live in IL so I rarely get my hands on a Sunday Chicago sports page section but I was lucky and have the Trib edition from Sunday, June 22

Phil Rogers ends his "inside Baseball" column on page 2 with a quote from Bill Bavasi asked what he would have done differently now that the Mariners have let him go

"In retrospect, maybe I should have put a chain on the (clubhouse) door and torched it"

Wow, this sound rather bitter to me

I've heard it said not to burn bridges behind you, that means the clubhouse also

I'm not sure how soon Mr Bavasi will find himself on the inside track for another GM's job

His quote about Bedard was better.

He was asked why Bedard wasn't giong far in games and he said

"You gotta ask him. Good luck. And he's gonna have some stupid answer, some dumbass answer."

It had/has to be pretty bad considering the quotes (albeit anonymously)by the coaching staff.

I think Bavasi already has the inside track considering he's been the baseball management circles. They love their rethreads.

That's priceless. Unbelievable that he traded for him only six months ago.

Not doubting anyone personally, but I should think this would be getting a lot more play on ESPN and the like if it he said these things.

Link?

bill, i think you did more than enough damage with your signings and trades... no need to burn down the stadium too.

My God that's all kinds of awesome.

Perhaps a tad bitter?

Living here in Seattle, I've witnessed a team-wide meltdown on par with the Cubs in 06, 99 and 02 (sucks that I can quickly reference 3 recent Cubs teams that have crapped the bed the same way). Bavasi, while not smart in making those statements, wasn't wrong about Bedard. The guy honestly has not given a crap since being here. I know the kind of talent he has, but he has pulled himself from games twice this year saying he was gassed with fewer than 100 pitches. More is made of this because of the team's struggles and the fact that he may be the worst post-game interview in all of sports, but it would have been a disaster had he landed in Chicago.

Honestly, Bavasi has made some bad moves. But he put together what everyone knew was a light-hitting team with what should have been a dominant pitching staff. Between Felix, Bedard, Washburn, Silva and a strong 1-2 at the back of the bullpen, it should have been at least a competitive team. However, the underperformances here have been astounding.

So, if a contender decides to get Bedard from the M's, could he decide to actually like baseball again and work to get better, and actually pitch well again?

I never believed in the Mariner hype. Third Eye raises another point that has long baffled me - why did anyone think Silva, Washburn, and Batista were some badass kind of 3-4-5?

Eh, it had me fooled. A decent performance by Bautista last year coupled with previous good years from Washburn and Silva. Admittedly, though, I only moved here this year, so I wasn't that familiar with those pitchers outside of general name recognition. In any case, it should have been a decent enough back end behind a strong top of the rotation.

A case of a third eye blind if I've ever heard one.

Bedard sounds like a heck of a guy as well.

ESPN The Magazine had a page dedicated to him in their "the athletes are the editors" edition, and he came across as a guy that didn't like baseball, his teammates or anything involving the game. I never knew anything about him before, but after hearing the stories about him recently, it makes you wonder where his head is.

The O's made a heck of a deal moving this guy. It sounds like he's a guy that is very good at something he really doesn't like to do.
