Just heard on the radio that Lute Olson is stepping down at Arizona as reported by Dickie V.

Mike Dunlap to take over this year. Link: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3659611

Screw Michael Snaer, I want to see Abdul Gaddy decommit from Arizona for a second time and go to UCLA:

We’re in unchartered waters on this one given the timing of the announcement.

When reached via text message Thursday morning, Scout.com asked if Olson’s retirement would impact his decision, Abdul Gaddy responded, “Yes it does.”

Here’s what we’ve gathered from a source close to the situation. During visits and conversations in recent months, Olson guaranteed the recruiting class that he would be around to coach them.

“Lute Olson personally guaranteed Abdul that he would help him get to the league from Arizona,” a source told Scout.com.

Yes, please back out of the Snaer battle.

I'm not even convinced Lute is still alive. I think they were gonna "Weekend at Bernie's" him this year but finally thought better of it.

Welcome back, Lute

Lute Olson’s press conference on Tuesday marked his return in two days. One, he’s back coaching for the first time in really a year. Two, he’s back to the humble, likeable Olson that has blessed Tucson with his presence for so many years.

Whoops.

Point guard is a glaring weakness and the most importanat spot on the court. Losing Freeman was a huge blow. I don't know your schedule, but I imagine 20 wins would be a miracle.

Let me clarify that I don't think Iowa will be a good team and don't expect them to win 20.

But I do think (and could definitely be wrong here also) they're a fairly safe bet to win at least 15-16. With that as a baseline expectation, all it takes is some favorable luck in close games to get there. I expect about 17 wins.

That could happen as the Big Ten is down this year. I guess a lot depends on how good Gatens is right away.

Seriously who's going to take 5th place in the Big Ten this year? Any team you can suggest sounds ridiculous. Is Penn State really going to take 5th?

If we would still have Jamar I would have guessed us. Now, eh maybe Penn State. Might still be us. If it is us the Big Ten better get 3 bids.

I've never seen 5-10 so up in the air before the year. No one in that group is very good but no one is as awful as the bottom has been at times either.

Is IU the consensus bottom of the barrel? Michigan looks pretty bad but I'm hesitant to really pick against Beilein. Northwestern will be better but not good. Who knows with Penn State. I agree that Minnesota will take a step back. I love McCamey but I don't know about Illinois inside. Smith is obviously a major loss and Legion will have to be a stud which he could be. I've already said what I think of Iowa.

Definitely agree 5-10 is completely up in the air

i think illinois could get there if they get the ball to brock more often, at times, he was the only guy who could create his own shot. if bruce was actually concerned about winning games and less about building character, the backcourt starters after b10 season starts would be:

dmac

legion

brock

and not....

dmac

frazier

meacham

also, illini fans: mike tisdale is not a player. he is not, and never will be, any good.

Arizona 09 verbal Mike Moser has already de-committed. Apparently Moser and his dad only found out Lute Olson was stepping down when someone from USC called to check his status.

Abdul Gaddy is planning on de-committing from Arizona for a second time and re-opening his recruitment. Rivals went as far as to say Gaddy is looking like a UCLA lean.

Minnesota was 3-14 against top 100 teams last year. 2 of those wins were against #100 Iowa State and the charred remains of Indiana basketball as they mailed in the rest of their season.

For reference Ohio State was 11-11.

Well considering Minnesota split the season series with Ohio State with each team winning by double digits when at home and that was during the first year under a new head coach I don't see how anyone could say Ohio State and Minnesota won't be close this year.

Plus your numbers are off. Minnesota was indeed bad first top 100 (2-10) but all but one of those games were against top 50. They were 2-9 first top 50. Ohio State? 2-10 first top 50.

that would suck to be an incoming frosh at arizona. they should've made lute retire last spring

Or Budinger, who I believe as lured back by Lute.

I have to think Gaddy to UCLA is as good as done.

I would think the worst thing about being Chase Buddinger would be each morning when you have to look in the mirror.

Brandon Jennings sure comes out ahead (what a year plus for Arizona).

It's going to be very difficult for IU to climb out of the Big Ten cellar. It may -- may -- be possible because Assembly Hall should still offer a greater homecourt advantage than the other teams at the bottom of the conference. IU is looking at probably about 8-10 wins overall.

At the risk of rising the ire of the SEC fans, let's keep the topic on the Big 10. Upon determining I can't have a 7 way tie for last place, this is what I've got for my preseason predictions.

MSU

Wisconsin

Purdue

Ohio St.

Illinois

Penn St.

Minnesota

Northwestern

Iowa

Michigan

Indiana

4 tourney teams, 3 NITs.

And as usual, my attempt at a road map to win the damn Big 10/ACC Challenge.

12/1: Wisconsin over VA Tech

12/2: Purdue over Duke, Illinois over Clemson, Ohio St. over Miami, Minnesota over Virginia

12/3: MSU over UNC

IU/Wake(12/3), UM/Maryland(12/3), FSU/NU(12/3), & Iowa/BC(12/2) should be laughers. Penn St. could steal one at GA Tech.(12/3)

As always no margin for error, and we'll need an upset or 2 to pull it off. If we don't enter 12/3 up 5-1, we're probably toast.
