You're just combining his May and June ERAs and dividing by 2. He threw a lot more innings in May.

Ha you are right Im a dumbass sorry. Point still stands hes been terrible for 17 innings and terrific for 15 innings, although he was still averaging a hit per inning in May, but he was also averaging a strikeout per inning. They just need to be cautious when they use him right now, because hes going through a rough patch again.

Allowing Howry to pitch is starting to become a problem. Without his velocity he just isn't good. Marquis pitched well today and now has a respectable era.

Howry since April(including today): 3.13 ERA 20 Ks, 3 BB

You sure thats right SSR? He had a 1.76 ERA in May, and so far in June he has a 6.75, that would be a 4.26 ERA wouldnt it? Howry was terrible in April, great in May, and so far terrible in June. I dont know what his deal is hes historically a slow starter, and right now he has no business in a close game, but that doesnt mean he shouldnt be used at all. Games like today are when he should be used for right now until he starts getting batters out consistently. Right now Eyre and Marmol should be the setup guys.

It's not a straight average because Howry pitched 15 1/3 innings in May, and only 5 innings so far in June. I'm actually calculating a 3.10 ERA for him since the end of April.

Thinking about it, I probably divided by 20.1 instead of 20 1/3 without thinking.

Didn't see it live, but David Eckstein crawling on his hands and knees to get to a ball he muffed was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

howry may be declining slightly due to age, but his biggest problem is bad luck. here's his LD/GB/FB tendencies... note last year versus this year:

http://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.aspx?playerid=237&position=P&page=9&type=full

last year versus this year - basically identical. his LOB% was above the league norm the last 2 years, and is at the norm this year, which is a contributor to his sub-par performance this year. given marmol's phenomenal peripherals the last 2 years, i think it'd be almost impossible to argue that someone other than him is the cubs' best reliever. kerry's numbers were fairly middling the last 2 years, but given his stuff - a fastball that has returned to the mid-90s, and command which has proven to be much more solid than in his previous lives as a starter/reliever - one would expect that he's the cubs' second best reliever.

so if howry's luck normalizes, he's the cubs' third-best reliever. that's a nice "problem" to have. especially if eyre pitches very well against LH batters and wuertz continues to be what he's been the past 2-3 years. if they stay healthy, i feel confident in saying that the cubs' bullpen will be a definite strength heading into the playoffs.
