From the oldest living ex-major leaguer, 99-year old Bill Werber.

“Babe Ruth hit a home run and I wanted to show them how fast I could run,” Werber said of being driven in by Ruth after drawing a walk in his first major league plate appearance in 1930 with the New York Yankees. “So I get into the dugout, and — finally — Babe got into the dugout. He patted me on the head and said, ’Son, you don’t have to run like that when the Babe hits one.”’

Werber also was drawn to Ruth’s love of practical jokes. With great detail, Werber recalled how Ruth suckered pitcher Ed Wells into going on a double date with him after a game in Detroit.

“When they knocked on the door of the lady’s house, a big, ferocious guy opened the door with a gun and said, ’So you’re the guy who’s been chasing my wife,”’ Werber said. “So Babe said, ’Run, Ed. Run for your life!’ So Ed runs out the door and the gun went off, ’Bang, bang.’ Babe fell down on the porch. Ed ran into a fence, then turned the other way and made it back to the hotel.

“The players were sitting around — this was all staged, too — and they said, ’Babe is upstairs. He’s asking for you, but he’s dying.’ So he went up there and they had Babe with talcum powder all over his face and ketchup on his shirt. He thought Babe was dying.

Ruth sounds like he would have been a hell of a lot of fun to hang out with. Although with the way he partied, he'd have probably killed me. Not much of a partier/drinker, but a night out with the Babe would be well worth the hangover, I think.

One night on the road, Babe Ruth smuggled a woman into his room. His teammate Ernie Shore tried to sleep, but the moans, groans and squeaking bedsprings were impossible to ignore. Finally, with the sun nearly up, Shore dozed off.

He later awoke to find Ruth asleep and the woman gone. He also noticed four or five cigar butts next to the bed, about which he inquired when Ruth woke up. "Oh, that!" the Babe explained with a smile. "I like a cigar every time I'm finished."

I am watching the PBS Ken Burns Baseball series (got it at my local library) and there is a mention of a question asked of Walter Johnson, all-time great pitcher with the Washington Senators

Walt was asked "Who hit the farthest home run off of you?"

"Well I don't know if Babe hit it the farthest but they got the tiniest the fastest" he replied

This series is strongly recommended for anyone who has an interest in baseball history

Ken Burns' series is very good, but it is does have some very glaring flaws. Chief amongst these is his bias toward New York and Boston baseball. He has a brief moment in the 1930's episode where he talks about the gashouse gang, but other than that and the occasional negro league story, it is focused primarily on Yankees/Sox/Dodgers/Giants.

If you want to talk Babe Ruth, this is the thread. If the bickering goes on, people will get banned and suspended. And people will write outraged emails about it, but they'll still be banned or suspended. Your choice. Easy enough!

No one is bickering here so I assume you are talking about a different thread but why does it matter what thread people post in as long as it correlates to the thread title? Also isn't bickering and arguing the point to message boards? I have no idea what's going on so I'm pretty much just asking what is up because I'm lost as to why you posted this.

Because the thread became a continuation of the arguments that were going on in other threads across the board about friends and foes. Which is fine -- argue away in Rants in Social -- but not in every thread. A lot of the filler posts were split off this thread.

She wasn't talking about bickering in the sense of constructive debate, but rather the personal pissing matches that many, many threads (including this one, before the offending posts were removed) have devolved into. And that most certainly is NOT the purpose of message boards.
