From that awesome thread:

He will be come the super Neifi Macias! Which means he will be overpaid and overrated by the organiza...Oh crap...to late...

This sucks...FREE THE RIOT!

Just for fun, last year PECOTA pegged his 2007 production at replacement level and declined to rank 2008 or beyond as he was predicted to be out of baseball with only a 1/3 shot at remaining in the league in 2007.

This just smacks of a typical Hendry signing. Overpay for a guy that no one else values nearly as much as him. Makes no sense whatsoever (given the years/$$$)

Happy to see that I didn't mind the DeRosa signing. I have to laugh at the guys who were on my wish list now, though. DeRosa has outperformed all the 2b's I had listed. I do still believe at the time the contract was too long and was too much money. But, he has definitely earned it.

I have to like DeRosa since he was signed the day I bought my house and the day my nephew was born. All in all, that was a pretty great day.

I liked the signing and didn't mind the years and money. But I'm usually optimistic about Cubs' signings. I tend to back them up because I'm happy that they're doing something.

Yeah i laugh that this dude is the 8th hitter, thats a compliment to him and this team.

I was unsure he could repeat the 06 numbers in 07, but was way more optimistic he could repeat 07 in 08.

Theriot #s + accent to the bigs is awfully similiar to DeRosa's. Mark had more of frame to grow into the power but they are quite similar up to where Theriot is now. Anyway Mark is awesome and his versatility is way beyond what i imagined.

i'm sticking to my guns and saying this is a horrible signing. remember his defense in the first week of the season???

Happy to have been in the minority regarding DeRosa. At worst I expected him to be an average offense and defensive 2B, making his contract market value. He's out-produced that low-end expectation. DeRosa isn't the first Hendry signing that was blasted at signing time as an overpay, only to turn out being average contract or even a discounted contract entering the back half of the deal. Jones and Dempster come to mind right away.

The most common thing that happens in the Transactions threads is a lack of understanding of the screwy baseball economy, particularly the year-over-year trends of the last decade, and a lack of relevance with respect to that year's market peers. What may seem like an overpay year one, even with top-end production for the player, may not be year three or four.

With the exception of bench veterans, Hendry has done a good job reading the market. And even though he accurately read the bullpen market the year leading into the offseason of exploded value, there is a valid debate on whether it's money well spent (as bullpen arms can be cheap and there is no clear evidence that bullpen youth are more unreliable). So bench and (IMO) bullpen allocation are Hendry's dings in budget allocation, but he has done well with every day players and pitchers for the most part.

it was those damned trade rumors that powered his bat and weakened his glove

Signing is looking pretty clutch with Soriano consistently being out with an injury of some sort. (no fault of his, just unlucky so far)

Lets hope he continues to produce at his current rate, we're gonna need people step up.
