any interest in doing something like this to reduce unfair trades:

The best solution for our league has been Open Market Trading. The main complaint most everybody had when a lopsided trade is made is they didn't even know the player was available. For years and years we'd have at least three different message board blowups over trades, usually with a common theme. 'You got ripped off, you could have got more,' or 'I would have paid more!' That's not a problem any more. Once a trade is agreed to, it goes to the message board for 48 hours. Any counter-offer that's made in public must be responded to before the trade goes through.

I don't know. The point of having a trade public is so other owners have the right to VETO the trade. Not to see who can top the best offer. You can personally auction off players to the highest bidder, but I don't think it should be mandatory. We have the "On the block" page. Everyone should know who is available and what every team is looking for. And I'd imagine most trades are made involving guys NOT necessarily on the block.

I don't see a need for it. There are going to be lopsided trades in the kind of league we play in. There are lopsided trades in the major leagues, also. The reason we have lopsided trades is exemption status, point differentials, point cap, etc......

The lopsided trades that require league approval are in free leagues where bottom feeder teams trade off all of their best players to a team in first place to better help that team win the league. I don't think you'll see that here. Most trades will be made to improve one's own team and who cares about the team you are trading with.

Let's look at a trade Tim and I made this past offseason. Granted, it's not during the regular season, but it's still a lopsided trade if you don't look at it in hindsight. I traded Josh Hamilton and BJ Upton for Brandon Webb, Matt Hollliday and Rickie Weeks. I could afford to take on all those points towards the cap, and Tim had to make room in his cap. This is a very lopsided trade, but I expect to get the better end of a deal since I have the cap space to work with while other teams don't.

The same thing can happen during the regular season. We have an on the block section to let everyone know that you are willing to make deals, what kinds of players you are willing to part with and what players you would like to trade for.

I don't recall any deals where people "blew up". The A-Rod deal was a bit of a shocker since no one was aware that he was available, but I think that actually hurts the team that has him if they don't make it public knowledge. If you made it public knowledge, you might be able to get a better deal from another team. My guess on A-Rod is that he wasn't really on the market until a team offered up a deal that made him available. Any one of the teams in this league could have done the same thing as Tim in that scenario. Tim was the one who pulled it off. Good for Tim.

Other than the A-Rod deal, I have no idea what trades people blew up over.

What I like least about waiting for approval on trades is how it can hurt your team right now. Let's say I have an injury that happens today. I can offer up a player or two to someone who I know is looking to upgrade and fill my injury opening on my roster on that same day. How long will I go without a player in my daily line up while we wait for approval from other league members?

Trade approval is needed whenever you are looking at possible collusion within the league. Do we have that here? I haven't seen it. I'd trade with anyone, anyday if the trade works for me. I don't have any special need for anyone in this league to win if I don't win. And I haven't seen it from anyone else.

The only real blowup I can remember is when a trade got overruled when I traded for Bonds. I threw a massive fit in that case and eventually got it reinstated by being such a pain in the ass. Then I would have been far better off if it had been overruled because that was when Bonds missed the entire season.

There's a lesson for me somewhere in there... :-k

HAHA! And I appreciate that trade. I'm never opposed to trading with you. They've worked out well for both of us. That will only happen though if I'm not in the playoffs and you are and probably vice versa. I'm in agreement though with you or Tim not winning the league.

I don't really have many complaints about trades either. The one thing I notice is that prospects are WAY overvalued in this league. There are some tweaks I would like to make to the structure.

Anyone interested in a sim league? I think I asked this before but never got off the ground.

I don't know if they're overvalued. The fact is if the prospect is going to produce at an acceptable level in the majors the exemptions are a huge bargaining chip.

Of course then there's guys like Carlos Pena who waste away all of their exemption years before finally figuring it out.

almost all guys "waste" away all their exemptions before being good. which is why i don't get why you guys all have such boners for really young guys that will get called up and suck at age 22, be pretty bad again at 23 (and probably spend some more time in the minors), be mediocre at 24, average at 25 and slightly above average at 26. by the time they're an acceptable fantasy player they have no exemptions.

guys i've always valued are guys like r. martin, cano, and now david murphy...i picked all those guys up after they made it to the bigs and were already pretty decent...and still had exemption(s). i'd rather have a 26 year old good fantasy producer with one exemption left than a 21 year old wunderkid with three.

I'll agree that a lot of the players "waste" their exemptions. On the other hand, there's plenty of players like Hanley Ramirez, Uggla, Upton's, etc.

I think it's pretty clear there are some players that exemptions are very important.
